What is fire testing?

Fire testing is the process of evaluating materials, products, or systems to determine their resistance to fire, heat, and smoke under controlled conditions. This testing ensures that building materials and products meet safety standards and perform as expected during a fire. Fire testing can include assessments of flammability, fire resistance, smoke development, and toxicity. These tests are crucial for ensuring the safety of occupants in buildings and for meeting legal and insurance requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fire testing technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fire Testing Technician, you need a strong understanding of fire safety standards, test procedures, and materials science, often supported by a relevant technical degree or certification. Familiarity with fire testing equipment, data acquisition systems, and ISO/ASTM testing protocols is typically required. Attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate test results, compliance with safety regulations, and the reliability of fire safety products and systems.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in fire testing roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Fire Testing often encounter challenges such as working with strict safety protocols, coordinating with multiple stakeholders, and managing tight project timelines. Ensuring compliance with regulatory standards requires meticulous attention to detail, and unexpected test results may necessitate additional troubleshooting or retesting. To address these challenges, clear communication with clients and team members, staying updated on evolving regulations, and proactive planning for contingencies are essential. Collaborating closely with engineers, lab technicians, and regulatory agencies can also help streamline the testing process and ensure successful project outcomes.

Fire Testing involves evaluating materials or products to ensure they meet safety standards through controlled tests. Fire Inspection focuses on assessing existing buildings or systems for compliance with fire safety codes. While both roles aim to enhance fire safety, Fire Testing is more lab-based and product-focused, whereas Fire Inspection is field-based and building-focused.

Is fire testing a good career?

Fire testing is a specialized field involving evaluating materials and products for fire resistance and safety, often requiring knowledge of fire science, materials, and testing standards. It can offer stable employment opportunities in industries such as manufacturing, construction, and safety regulation, with roles often requiring certifications and adherence to safety protocols.

Job description

Who We Are
At Encore Fire Protection, we are proud to be the east coast's largest full-service fire protection company, serving over 90,000 customers from Maine to Louisiana. With a team of over 2,200 dedicated employees, we provide innovative, customized fire suppression, fire sprinkler, and fire alarm solutions that protect lives and properties every day.
Our goal is to deliver superior experience to those who trust us to safeguard what matters most. We are passionate about continuous growth, innovation, and maintaining a culture that thrives on success and commitment to safety. Our mission? To be the best fire protection company the industry has ever seen.
The Opportunity
As a Sprinkler Inspector, you will be part of our Advanced Test and Inspection Department and play a key role in making sure life safety systems perform the way they are designed to when it matters most. You will inspect, test, and maintain a wide range of sprinkler and suppression systems and help customers stay in compliance with NFPA 25 and local regulations.
This role is a good fit for someone who is steady, detail-focused, and comfortable working in the field. You will spend your time at customer sites, checking equipment, verifying operation, documenting what you find, and talking with customers about the condition of their systems and any next steps.
If you like clear expectations, hands-on work, and knowing that what you do each day directly impacts safety and reliability in the buildings you visit, you will do well here.
Key Responsibilities
You are the person walking a building with a gauge in one hand and an inspection report in the other, spotting the valve that is not quite right or the test that does not pass. You value clear standards, honest results, and turning what you see in the riser room into simple next steps for the customer. In this role, you will:
  • Perform inspections, testing, and routine maintenance on fire sprinkler systems in line with NFPA 25 and local regulations.
  • Evaluate system performance, verify that devices, valves, and control assemblies are operating properly, and record test results accurately.
  • Identify code deficiencies, potential hazards, and system impairments and provide clear recommendations for repairs or corrective actions.
  • Coordinate inspection schedules with customers, contractors, and building maintenance personnel and communicate findings in a straightforward way.
  • Work with the Advanced Test and Inspection team and Deficiency Sales team to help customers move from inspection findings to timely, compliant repairs or upgrades.
  • Respond to service calls or emergency needs including occasional night, weekend, or short notice work when customer needs arise and assist with basic troubleshooting and minor repairs.
  • Maintain company tools, testing equipment, and your vehicle in clean, organized, and reliable condition.
  • Follow all safety procedures and company policies while representing Encore with professionalism and integrity on every job site.

What You Bring to the Table
  • Minimum three years of experience inspecting or maintaining fire sprinkler systems
  • High school diploma or equivalent; trade school or technical training preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of NFPA 25, NFPA 13, and applicable building and fire codes
  • Ability to read blueprints, riser diagrams, and system schematics
  • Solid mechanical aptitude and attention to detail when working with valves, piping, and system components
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for reporting, documentation, and customer conversations
  • Proven ability to work independently and manage your time effectively in a field-based role
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  • A willingness to work occasional overtime, weekends, or nights as needed to support customer or emergency needs

What Makes You Stand Out
  • You hold NICET certification in water-based systems for inspection, testing, or layout.
  • You have additional technical training in fire protection, sprinkler systems, or related trade.
  • You have experience inspecting both sprinklers and special hazard or suppression systems.
  • You have prior experience working closely with deficiency sales or service teams to transition inspection findings into repair work.

Salary commensurate with experience with opportunity for a results-driven bonus based on personal output and effectiveness in role. Expected hourly range between $30 - $45 per hour.
Beyond the Paycheck
At Encore, we're all about creating a culture where success is celebrated. We recognize that our work makes people's lives safer, and we reward those who contribute to our growth. Here's what you can expect:
  • Competitive Pay: Hourly rate based on experience with a performance-based bonus opportunity.
  • Tuition Assistance: Paid tuition for fire protection-related schooling needed to obtain licensing.
  • Purpose-Driven Work Environment: We believe in working smarter, not harder. You'll be part of a culture that values results, and we empower our team to focus on impactful work.

  • Retirement Planning: Participation in our Fidelity 401(k) plan with a company match, helping you save for your future.
