While both roles involve firefighting knowledge, a Fire Science Instructor primarily teaches and trains future firefighters in classrooms and training facilities, requiring educational credentials. In contrast, a Firefighter responds directly to emergencies in the field, focusing on fire suppression and rescue operations. The two careers share certifications but differ in work environment and daily responsibilities.

Works with management to assess training needs for Bryan County Fire & Rescue. Develops, coordinates, and delivers classes and training to department personnel. Has primary responsibility to ensure that Fire & Rescue personnel are proficiently trained to perform their assigned tasks, meet minimum State and national standards of training and that required certifications are kept current. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Division Chief of Training, but the individual must take initiative and exercise independent judgment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Plan, coordinate, and conduct training programs that align with department goals and state and national standards.
Deliver initial and continuing education instruction for all levels of personnel.
Maintain training and certification records, including entry into the department’s electronic records management system.
Evaluate personnel performance and competencies to ensure compliance with training standards.
Assist with the maintenance and readiness of all training equipment, facilities, and props.
Attend training conferences and courses to stay current with modern firefighting and EMS practices.
Performs general office work, including but not limited to attending and conducting meetings, reviewing mail and literature, preparing reports and correspondence, entering computer data, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc.
Respond to emergency incidents as a firefighter and provide medical care as required.
Serve as a subject matter expert for fire and EMS education and assist with curriculum development.
Support department-wide initiatives related to professional development, leadership training, and safety.
Responds to emergency incidents for assignment to command staff roles such as Incident Commander, Safety Officer, Division or Group Supervisor, Command Post Aide, etc. May be assigned to act in higher-level operational or command roles, consistent with department policy, when authorized.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration, Business or a public safety related field along with extensive experience in emergency management, including at least three to five years of related experience and supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education, experience, special qualifications and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for the job. A combination of education and work experience maybe considered substitution for requirements. NIMS 100,200,300,700,800, NPQ/IFSAC Firefighter I and II, NPQ/IFSAC Fire Officer I, NPQ/IFSAC Instructor I, NREMT(State) EMT-B or higher Certification. Must possess a valid Class F Georgia Driver’s License or equivalent.
