Summary of Purpose
Oakland Community College is seeking a pool of qualified candidates with instructional skills to join our team of faculty and administrators to provide high quality programs to our district, community, and most importantly, our students. Teaching assignments may be temporary, part-time, and/or on call and may be immediate or as needed. This posting is not for a specific assignment or a full-time position.
Applications to the pool are accepted continuously. When the department has an immediate need, applications will be reviewed, and candidates contacted. Examples of desired skills for instruction include: Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council (MFFTC) Certified Instructor I or II (and/or III if /when adopted through the MFFTC).
Applications will remain on file for up to one year. The pool will be closed and reopened each academic year in the fall. Individuals who seek to remain in the pool must reapply each new academic year.
Typical Duties
  • Provides lesson plans, objectives, and identified outcomes for the learning modules tied to MFFTC Basic Fire Training Curriculum.
  • Teaches, instructs, and coaches students in basic fire training, related topics, and skills.
  • Monitors students' performance to make suggestions/corrections for improvement and to ensure that they satisfy course standards, training requirements, and MFFTC state certification standards.
  • Works individually and with other instructors to review and evaluate individual students and their progress.
  • Maintains accurate and complete student records as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Ability to effectively present, teach, and coach basic fire training curriculum at the basic fire academy level.
  • Ability to effectively present, teach, and coach students in the advanced fire training curriculums.
  • Ability to teach pre-service candidates as well as paid, paid-on-call, volunteer, and public safety officer/fire fighters in the advanced programs.
  • Must function well in an adult learning environment.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Minimum of five years' experience as a Michigan certified Fire Fighter I and II.
  • Must be a Michigan certified Instructor I, II, or III
  • Must have curriculum subject area knowledge/personal experience (This can be through years of service, specialized training, educational opportunities, etc.)
  • Must meet and maintain all MFFTC instructor requirements and standards.
