What is a fire chief?

Fire Chiefs are the highest-ranking officers in a fire department, responsible for overseeing all operations and administration. They manage personnel, develop policies, coordinate emergency response, and ensure compliance with safety regulations. Fire Chiefs also work with local government, budget resources, and lead public education efforts on fire prevention. Their leadership is crucial in both daily department management and during major emergency incidents.

What does a fire chief do?

A fire chief is a public service officer who oversees the operation of the fire department. As a fire chief, your responsibilities include responding to calls and working as a firefighter, but you are primarily the administrator for the department. Your duties are to train and assess firefighters, set schedules, monitor budgets, make requests for new equipment and fire engines, and ensure that the department is functioning properly. You will also work with local government officials to assess community needs and ensure they are being met.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fire chief, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fire Chief, you need extensive knowledge of fire science, emergency management, and leadership, typically supported by experience as a firefighter and advanced certifications like Fire Officer or Fire Chief credentials. Familiarity with incident command systems, fire reporting software, and emergency communication tools is essential. Outstanding decision-making, communication, and team leadership skills help manage personnel and maintain public trust. These competencies are critical for ensuring effective emergency response, firefighter safety, and overall department performance.

What are the typical challenges a fire chief faces when managing both emergency operations and administrative duties?

Fire Chiefs often juggle the demands of leading emergency response efforts while also overseeing administrative responsibilities like budgeting, personnel management, and policy development. Balancing immediate operational needs—such as coordinating teams during fires or disasters—with long-term planning and resource allocation can be challenging. Effective Fire Chiefs foster strong communication within their teams, delegate tasks appropriately, and remain adaptable to rapidly changing scenarios. This dual focus requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and the ability to make quick, informed decisions under pressure.

CEO, Loss Prevention Solutions

Bodega Bay, CA • On-site

Full-time

Job description

About AACI Group

AACI Group, Inc. is dedicated to making insurance more accessible and affordable in catastrophe-prone regions. Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of wildfires and other natural disasters, while carriers are retreating from high-risk markets. Homeowners are being left with fewer and more expensive options. We are addressing this challenge by building AI-native insurance and loss prevention solutions.

The Role

We're looking for a CEO to own and grow the entire Loss Prevention Solutions (LPS) portfolio. This is a general manager role with real P&L responsibility, a startup-within-a-startup mandate, and the autonomy to build, acquire, or partner your way forward. If you've ever wanted to run a portfolio of mission-aligned products without starting from zero, this is it.

You'll take ownership of a suite of live and in-development loss prevention products:

  • FireFoil: aluminum-based wildfire structure wrap; think full building fire blankets: ready to scale
  • Wildfire Action Plan: AI-powered personalized wildfire preparedness app
  • Defensible Space Score: property-level wildfire defensibility rating tool
  • WiserBuild: building plan and materials assessment for insurance readiness

Each product is recognized as a standalone business and represents a piece of a larger connected ecosystem. Your job is to accelerate the growth for each of these while working to develop new and durable additions to the portfolio that contribute to our mission.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own Product + Growth
    • Set vision and strategy for each LPS product
    • Prioritize roadmaps and UX improvements -- use AI to iterate quickly
    • Drive engagement and revenue across the portfolio
    • Engage with other AACI subsidiaries to cross-sell and co-market
  • Build and Lead the Team
    • Recruit and manage MBA and undergraduate interns to own growth and/or UX for each brand
    • Operate a venture-studio-style model -- bring in hungry operators, give them a product, hold them accountable
    • Act as hiring manager and mentor for intern-level product leads across LPS brands
  • Expand the Portfolio
    • Develop new LPS concepts from scratch and/or identify acquisition opportunities and execute on acquiring them
    • Evaluate and integrate that fit the AACI loss prevention thesis

About You

  • A builder with operator instincts: You've run something, launched something, or been close enough to the action that you know what it takes
  • Search fund and/or founder energy: You're drawn to acquiring or inheriting a portfolio and turning it into something bigger
  • Comfort with ambiguity: Not everything is defined yet, and that excites you
  • Wildfire, climate, or insurance knowledge is a bonus: Intellectual curiosity about the space is required
  • Experience managing interns or early-career talent and getting real output from them
  • Willing to pursue the NFPA CWMS certification within the first 90 days
  • The blog post The “I”s of an Owner resonates with you and you professionally exhibit intensity, intuition, initiative and imagination
Location & Reporting
  • Based in either Greater Boston, MA, or Greater San Francisco Bay Area, CA.
  • Reports directly to the CEO of AACI Group, Inc.
Why Join Us

This is an opportunity to join a well-funded, early-stage startup and drive the creation of insurance and resilience products that directly address the climate crisis and help families remain in their homes.

Equal Opportunity Employer

AACI Group, Inc. and its subsidiaries are Equal Opportunity Employers. We believe that everyone deserves protection and access, and we are committed to building a diverse, inclusive workplace that reflects the communities we serve. Reasonable Accommodation

Our Mission
