What are Fintech Programmers?

Fintech Programmers are software developers who specialize in creating technological solutions for the financial industry. They design, build, and maintain applications related to banking, investments, payments, and other financial services, often using advanced programming languages and frameworks. These professionals work on projects such as mobile banking apps, trading platforms, blockchain technology, and financial data analysis tools. Their expertise helps financial institutions innovate, improve security, and enhance the customer experience in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

What are some unique challenges Fintech Programmers face when developing financial applications?

Fintech Programmers often encounter challenges related to ensuring high security and compliance with strict financial regulations while developing applications. They must design systems that can handle sensitive financial data, prevent fraud, and meet industry standards such as PCI DSS or GDPR. Additionally, integrating with legacy banking systems and third-party APIs can be complex, requiring robust error handling and real-time data processing skills. Collaboration with compliance officers, product managers, and QA testers is essential to deliver reliable, secure fintech solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fintech Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fintech Programmer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or C++, along with a solid understanding of financial systems and algorithms, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with financial APIs, blockchain technology, cloud platforms, and tools like SQL databases is typically required, and certifications in areas such as AWS or cybersecurity can be beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and adapting to regulatory changes. These skills ensure the secure, efficient, and innovative development of financial technology solutions in a rapidly evolving industry.

Job description

Job Description:

Senior Product Manager

ABOUT UPBOUND

Upbound Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: UPBD) is an omni-channel platform company committed to elevating financial opportunity for all through innovative, inclusive, and technology-driven financial solutions. Our customer-facing brands - Acima, Rent-A-Center, and Brigit - serve consumers across retail, e-commerce, and fintech channels nationwide. Upbound Group is headquartered in Plano, Texas.

ABOUT ACIMA

Acima is a leading fintech brand offering lease-to-own solutions that give customers access to the things they need, when they need them. Our digital-first platform is built to make financial access fast, fair, and friction-free - and the Apply product is at the heart of that mission.

ABOUT THE POSITION

We are seeking a Senior Product Manager, Applyto own one of Acima's most consequential customer experiences: the application flow. This role owns everything from the moment a customer initiates an application through the moment they submit it - a journey that directly drives approval rates, customer trust, and business growth.

You'll work at the intersection of customer experience, data science, and engineering to build an application flow that is intelligent, accessible, and conversion-optimized. This is a high-visibility role with meaningful product surface area: form UX, identity and income verification integrations (including Plaid), AI-assisted decisioning signals, and real-time feedback loops that shape whether a customer completes their application or abandons it.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own and evolve the Apply product roadmap, balancing short-term conversion improvements with long-term platform investments that scale across channels and customer segments.
  • Lead the design and continuous iteration of the end-to-end application experience - from entry point through submission - across web and mobile surfaces built on React.
  • Partner with Data Science and Analytics teams to incorporate AI and predictive signals into the application flow, including intent modeling, field-level dropout prediction, and risk-informed UX personalization.
  • Own the Plaid integration strategy within the Apply flow, including bank verification, income and asset verification, and the ongoing tradeoffs between verification depth, conversion friction, and fraud risk.
  • Define and track success metrics including application completion rate, time-to-submit, field-level dropout, verification pass rate, and downstream approval correlation.
  • Partner with Engineering across the full software release cycle - from discovery and requirements through deployment, rollout strategy, and post-launch iteration - with fluency in agile delivery and an ability to write clear, technically precise requirements.
  • Design and execute a rigorous experimentation program: A/B tests, multivariate tests, and staged rollouts that generate reliable signal on what drives conversion and trust.
  • Collaborate with Design, Compliance, Risk, and Data Engineering to ensure the Apply experience is compliant, inclusive, and performant across diverse customer profiles and device environments.
  • Anticipate and manage technical debt and platform constraints; make principled tradeoffs between speed, quality, and scale with transparency to senior stakeholders.
  • Communicate strategy, roadmap progress, risk, and experimentation results clearly to leadership and cross-functional partners.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • 5-8 years of product management experience with at least 2 years owning consumer-facing application, onboarding, or checkout flows in a fintech, lending, or e-commerce context.
  • Deep familiarity with financial data integrations, particularly Plaid - including income verification, asset verification, and bank account linking flows and their conversion tradeoffs.
  • Demonstrated experience incorporating AI and predictive analytics into product experiences - whether through dropout prediction, dynamic form logic, risk scoring, or personalized UX paths.
  • Strong foundation in experimentation: you've designed and interpreted A/B tests, understand statistical significance, and have used test results to drive meaningful product decisions.
  • Comfort working directly with React-based engineering teams; you can read component-level tickets, participate in technical design reviews, and write requirements that don't leave room for ambiguity.
  • Solid computer science foundation - enough to reason about API contracts, data pipelines, latency tradeoffs, and system reliability as they affect the customer-facing experience.
  • Proficiency with funnel analytics, behavioral instrumentation, and tools like Mixpanel, Amplitude, Looker, or equivalent.
  • A track record of owning products across the full release cycle: discovery, definition, build, launch, and continuous improvement.
  • Strong judgment in ambiguous, high-stakes problem spaces, with the ability to align diverse stakeholders around a clear point of view.
  • A Bachelor's degree is required. In addition, the ideal candidate brings equivalent practical experience applying product thinking to complex, ambiguous problems - and a demonstrated track record of critical thinking that goes beyond execution. The best outcomes in this role will come from someone who can interrogate assumptions, connect signals across data and customer behavior, and reason from first principles when the path forward isn't obvious.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Competitive compensation
  • Full health benefits - Medical, Dental, Vision
  • 401(k) match (5% / 4%)
  • Discretionary time off (DTO)
  • Health savings account (HSA) with company contribution
  • College tuition reimbursement (STEM degrees)
  • Unlimited LinkedIn Learning access
  • On-site gym and showers
  • Free EV charging and covered parking
