To thrive as a FinOps Engineer, you need a solid understanding of cloud computing, financial analysis, and cost optimization, often supported by a background in computer science, finance, or cloud certifications. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), cost management tools, and data analytics systems is essential. Strong problem-solving, cross-functional collaboration, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for managing cloud spending efficiently and enabling organizations to maximize value from their cloud investments.

How does a FinOps Engineer typically collaborate with engineering and finance teams to optimize cloud spending?

A FinOps Engineer acts as a bridge between engineering and finance teams by translating technical cloud usage data into actionable financial insights. They often participate in regular meetings with both groups to review cloud costs, identify optimization opportunities, and set budgetary controls. This role requires clear communication to ensure that engineering teams can maintain performance while finance teams achieve cost visibility and predictability. FinOps Engineers also help establish and enforce best practices for tagging, resource allocation, and forecasting to support collaborative decision-making.

What are FinOps Engineers?

FinOps Engineers are professionals who specialize in cloud financial management, helping organizations optimize their cloud spending and improve budgeting, forecasting, and cost allocation. They work closely with engineering, finance, and operations teams to implement best practices for cloud usage and cost control. Meet the Team

Splunk Cloud FinOps is dedicated to maximizing the business value of our cloud investments by driving financial accountability and optimizing cloud spend across the organization. We sit at the strategic intersection of engineering, finance, and business units, fostering deep collaboration to ensure efficient resource utilization, predictable cloud costs, and data-driven decision-making at scale. Our tight-knit team, comprised of a Scrum Master, an Engineering Team Lead, two Engineers, and two FinOps Practitioners, thrives on a culture of support, partnership, and innovation. We are passionate about building automation-first and API-first solutions to serve our diverse internal customer base, tackling complex challenges across nine-figure cloud spend at massive scale. If you're excited about making a tangible impact on how a leading technology company manages and optimizes its cloud infrastructure, this is the team for you.

Create dashboards, metrics, and reporting to enable cost visibility and accountability across the organization, relied on by hundreds of engineers spanning multiple products. • Advanced data analysis and Excel/Google Sheets proficiency, including pivot tables, complex formulas, and data visualization.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python or GoLang preferred.

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional FinOps initiatives that deliver measurable cost savings.

  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure architecture, software engineering, SRE, or DevOps practices.
