What is a FinOps engineer?

FinOps Engineers are professionals who specialize in cloud financial management, helping organizations optimize their cloud spending and improve budgeting, forecasting, and cost allocation. They work closely with engineering, finance, and operations teams to implement best practices for cloud usage and cost control. Their goal is to ensure that cloud investments deliver maximum business value by balancing performance, cost, and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FinOps engineer?

To thrive as a FinOps Engineer, you need a solid understanding of cloud computing, financial analysis, and cost optimization, often supported by a background in computer science, finance, or cloud certifications. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), cost management tools, and data analytics systems is essential. Strong problem-solving, cross-functional collaboration, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for managing cloud spending efficiently and enabling organizations to maximize value from their cloud investments.

They often participate in regular meetings with both groups to review cloud costs, identify optimization opportunities, and set budgetary controls. This role requires clear communication to ensure that engineering teams can maintain performance while finance teams achieve cost visibility and predictability. FinOps Engineers also help establish and enforce best practices for tagging, resource allocation, and forecasting to support collaborative decision-making.

The initial scope on cloud and AI cost management, extends into data platform economics, and will expand over time to include software usage-based contracts. The Director will own the full FinOps lifecycle-visibility, allocation, optimization, and governance-across all domains in scope This role is located in New York City

Build data products that expose transparent allocation by business unit, product, application, environment, owner, and workload type.
  • AI-Driven Cost Optimization - Manage commitment-based spend and optimize coverage versus utilization across providers. Deploy anomaly detection agents, variance reporting copilots, and automated remediation workflows with human-in-the-loop approvals for high-risk actions. Build forecasting models and track unit economics tied to measurable business outcomes.
  • Data, Automation, and Engineering Excellence - Partner with Engineering Analytics to normalize the spend data model across provider feeds and maintain an authoritative cost graph with lineage and quality checks. Oversee the cost data pipeline from ingestion to near real-time reporting, surfacing insights via dashboards and conversational agents for Finance and Engineering. Enable automated alerting, recommendations, and enforcement.
  • Governance, Risk, and Compliance - Establish and improve governance cadences: weekly operational agent reviews, monthly forecast/budget reviews, and quarterly contract/architecture reviews with AI-driven insights. Partner with procurement and legal on contract renewals, vendor rationalization, and commercial optimization. Embed responsible AI practices in all agentic workflows.

To be successful in this role, we're seeking the following:

  • 10+ years in technology finance, cloud engineering, infrastructure operations, or related discipline; at least 3 years leading a FinOps or technology cost management function.
  • Proven track record of building a FinOps capability from early maturity to a steady-state operating model in a large enterprise.
  • Strong understanding of cloud pricing models, commitment instruments, and consumption-based billing across major providers.
  • Experience designing cost allocation models, tagging taxonomies, and chargeback/showback frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without authority across engineering, finance, procurement, and executive stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and executive presentation skills; capable of translating AI-driven insights into actionable decisions.
  • Experience in financial services or a similarly regulated industry.
  • Preferred: Expertise in building agentic systems (rule-based and learning agents), MLOps/FinOps integrations, forecasting and anomaly detection methods, and responsible AI governance in production environments.
