What is a FinOps engineer?

FinOps Engineers are professionals who specialize in cloud financial management, helping organizations optimize their cloud spending and improve budgeting, forecasting, and cost allocation. They work closely with engineering, finance, and operations teams to implement best practices for cloud usage and cost control. Their goal is to ensure that cloud investments deliver maximum business value by balancing performance, cost, and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FinOps engineer?

To thrive as a FinOps Engineer, you need a solid understanding of cloud computing, financial analysis, and cost optimization, often supported by a background in computer science, finance, or cloud certifications. Position Summary

We are seeking an AWS Infrastructure Engineer to join a cloud platform engineering team responsible for building, automating, securing, and supporting AWS infrastructure used by enterprise application teams.

This role is grounded in the standard work performed by an AWS cloud platform engineering team, including AWS workload-account and sandbox provisioning, infrastructure-as-code and deployment automation, platform API and serverless engineering, observability, security remediation, AI infrastructure enablement, and operational/on-call ownership.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on infrastructure engineer who can partner with application teams, architecture, security, FinOps, and operations teams to deliver reliable AWS platform capabilities while improving automation, guardrails, and supportability across the environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build, configure, and support AWS workload accounts, classic accounts, sandbox environments, shared infrastructure, and application platform services across development, test, and production use cases.
  • Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot AWS infrastructure-as-code and deployment automation using AWS CDK, GitHub Actions, Harness, Python, Go, TypeScript, or similar engineering tools.
  • Engineer and support core AWS platform components such as Lambda, Step Functions, S3, KMS and customer-managed keys, EventBridge, API Gateway, CloudWatch, WAF, IAM, and related platform services.
  • Improve AWS security posture through workload-account guardrails, IAM and least-privilege access patterns, OIDC and workload identity, tagging, policy controls, vulnerability remediation, and collaboration with security and compliance stakeholders.
  • Support observability and operational visibility for AWS workloads through logging, telemetry, dashboards, alerting, and integrations with enterprise platforms such as Splunk, Cribl, New Relic, or comparable services.
  • Contribute to AWS AI infrastructure initiatives.
  • Troubleshoot production issues related to account provisioning, identity, security controls, logging, monitoring, deployment pipelines, AWS service configuration, and resource lifecycle, and drive issues through to resolution.
  • Participate in AWS on-call and incident rotations, including incident response, change implementation, validation, operational communications, and platform reliability improvements.
  • Contribute to modernization, migration, and platform-improvement efforts by breaking down work, refining implementation approaches, documenting reusable patterns, and helping create scalable solutions for repeated engineering needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Experience engineering and supporting AWS infrastructure in an enterprise environment, including AWS accounts, IAM, networking, security, logging, monitoring, serverless services, and shared platform components.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code, automated deployment pipelines, and software-based cloud operations using AWS CDK, Terraform, CloudFormation, or comparable tools.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across infrastructure, access, connectivity, logging, monitoring, deployment, and AWS service workflows.
  • Experience implementing or supporting secure access patterns such as least-privilege IAM, federated credentials, OIDC/workload identity, customer-managed keys, tagging, and policy guardrails.
  • Ability to work directly with application teams and cross-functional partners to understand requirements, guide implementation decisions, and deliver practical infrastructure solutions.
  • Ability to manage work in a structured way across testing, change control, implementation tasks, production validation, documentation, and operational follow-through.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with AWS CDK reusable constructs, AWS Organizations, workload-account automation, Harness, GitHub Actions, or ServiceNow-integrated platform workflows.
  • Experience with Amazon Bedrock, AgentCore, serverless platform engineering, event-driven architectures, or enterprise AI infrastructure.
  • Experience with AWS observability and operational tooling, including CloudWatch, Splunk, Cribl, New Relic, Prometheus/Grafana, or comparable platforms.
  • Familiarity with EKS/Kubernetes, cross-account AWS patterns, policy-as-code, vulnerability management, compliance requirements, or regulated-environment expectations for cloud platform engineering work.
