What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FinOps Cloud Practitioner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a FinOps Cloud Practitioner, you need a strong background in cloud computing, cost optimization, financial analysis, and familiarity with cloud service providers like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. Knowledge of FinOps frameworks, cloud billing systems, and certifications such as AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or FinOps Certified Practitioner are highly valuable. Strong analytical skills, stakeholder communication, and a collaborative mindset are essential soft skills for driving cost efficiency across technical and finance teams. These skills ensure organizations can effectively manage cloud expenditures and maximize business value from cloud investments.

Finops Cloud Practitioners often encounter challenges such as managing rapidly changing cloud costs, aligning technical teams with finance, and ensuring cost transparency across departments. Addressing these challenges typically involves implementing robust cost monitoring tools, fostering a culture of financial accountability, and establishing clear communication channels between engineering, finance, and leadership. Regular training and cost optimization reviews can also help teams stay proactive and agile in managing cloud expenditures.

About Salesforce
Salesforce is the #1 AI CRM, where humans with agents drive customer success together. Here, ambition meets action. Tech meets trust. And innovation isn't a buzzword - it's a way of life. The world of work as we know it is changing and we're looking for Trailblazers who are passionate about bettering business and the world through AI, driving innovation, and keeping Salesforce's core values at the heart of it all.
Ready to level-up your career at the company leading workforce transformation in the agentic era? You're in the right place! Agentforce is the future of AI, and you are the future of Salesforce.
Overview of the Role:
Are you passionate about cloud economics and maximizing the value of technology investments?
We are looking for an experienced Senior FinOps Practitioner to help optimize our cloud spending and drive our financial operations strategy!
In this role, you will partner closely with engineering, finance, and product teams to establish best practices for cloud cost management and ensure our infrastructure scales efficiently.
As a Senior Practitioner, you will bring deep expertise in cloud billing, cost allocation, and financial forecasting. You will serve as an evangelist for cloud financial management, building visibility into our spend and helping technical teams make cost-informed architecture decisions.
Your Impact
  • Increase Cost Efficiency: ~$10M+ in savings delivered in the first year on an $XB budget. Partner with Service Teams across Salesforce to reduce our cloud footprint, ensuring we are maximizing the return on every dollar spent on public cloud infrastructure.
  • Decrease Waste: Systematically identify and eliminate unused, orphaned, or over-provisioned resources.
  • Advance the FinOps Culture: Champion a culture of cost accountability and educate engineering and product teams on the financial impact of their technical decisions.
  • Improve Forecasting and Budgeting: Provide accurate, data-driven cloud spend forecasts to finance and engineering leadership to improve predictable budgeting.
  • Optimize Purchasing Strategies: Evaluate and recommend commitment-based discount strategies (e.g., Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, Committed Use Discounts) to maximize savings.

Responsibilities:
  • Own specific savings projects: Identify, quantify, and lead targeted initiatives to reduce cloud expenditure across the organization.
  • Drive leadership alignment: Work directly with VP+ level leaders to establish financial governance and drive actionable cost-saving measures within their specific programs.
  • Partner with Engineering: Work hands-on with engineering teams to implement cost-efficiency solutions, such as right-sizing compute resources, deleting unattached storage, and upgrading workloads to more efficient instance types.
  • Enhance Visibility: Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, and alerting mechanisms to track cloud usage and spend against budgets.

Required Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of professional experience in cloud financial management, FinOps, or a related field (e.g., cloud infrastructure, DevOps, or IT finance), with a demonstrated track record of driving measurable cost optimization outcomes at enterprise scale.
  • Cloud Economics Expertise: Deep understanding of the pricing models, billing mechanisms, and cost optimization tools of major cloud providers (AWS, GCP, and/or Azure).
  • Data Fluency: Strong proficiency in SQL, Python, or other analytical tools to manipulate and analyze large, complex cloud billing datasets (e.g., CUR data).
  • Cross-functional Leadership: Proven ability to communicate effectively across technical (Engineering/Architecture) and non-technical (Finance/Business) teams, translating cloud infrastructure concepts into financial impact.
  • Project Management: Experience managing and driving complex savings projects from discovery through implementation.
  • Reporting & Visualization: Experience building intuitive cost dashboards using tools like Tableau, Looker, or native cloud billing consoles.
  • FinOps Framework Knowledge: Thorough understanding of the FinOps Foundation lifecycle (Inform, Optimize, Operate) and its core principles.
  • AI Native: Adept at utilizing Generative AI tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT) to accelerate the development of cost-optimization scripts, automate routine FinOps reporting, and streamline workflows.
  • A related technical degree required

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Big Data Experience, including experience with ETL data pipelines.
  • Familiarity with financial reporting and analysis tools.
  • FinOps Certified Practitioner (FOCP) or similar certification
  • Experience with developing & maintaining code in Git
