What is a FinOps architect?

FinOps Architects are professionals who design and implement financial operations strategies for organizations using cloud services. They focus on optimizing cloud costs, enhancing financial accountability, and ensuring that engineering, finance, and business teams collaborate effectively. Their role involves setting up frameworks for cloud cost management, automating cost controls, and helping organizations get the most value from their cloud investments. FinOps Architects are crucial in organizations with significant cloud usage, as they enable better budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FinOps architect?

To thrive as a FinOps Architect, you need expertise in cloud financial management, cost optimization, and a solid understanding of cloud platforms, usually supported by experience in finance or cloud engineering. Familiarity with tools like AWS Cost Explorer, Azure Cost Management, and certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or FinOps Certified Practitioner is common. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and stakeholder management skills help bridge technical and business teams. These abilities are crucial for maximizing cloud value, controlling spend, and supporting business objectives in dynamic cloud environments.

How does a FinOps architect typically collaborate with engineering and finance teams to optimize cloud spending?

A FinOps Architect acts as a bridge between engineering and finance teams, facilitating transparent communication and shared accountability for cloud costs. They work closely with engineers to implement cost-efficient cloud architectures and promote best practices, while partnering with finance to develop budgets, forecast spend, and ensure financial governance. This role often involves running regular review sessions, creating dashboards, and providing actionable insights to help both teams make informed decisions about cloud resources.

What is the Solutions Consulting & Engineering (SC&E) Team and why join?
Solutions Consulting & Engineering is an organization that is Customer Focused and Solutions Led. We deliver end-to-end and emerging solutions to drive customer satisfaction, increase profitability and growth. Our success is enabled by our world-class management consulting, delivery excellence and engineering brilliance. Our goal is to bring together business acumen with full-stack technical know-how to develop innovative solutions for our clients' most complex challenges.
Position Overview
As a Cloud Solution Architect - FinOps, you are an individual contributor and recognized FinOps and cloud cost expert who delivers cloud financial management outcomes for enterprise clients and supports how WWT builds and sells them.
This is both a strategic and a hands-on delivery role. You deliver FinOps engagements directly, own delivery outcomes on live client work, and assist building the frameworks, tooling patterns, and delivery playbooks that let WWT scale a growing FinOps and FinOps for AI pipeline. You are equally comfortable running a cost optimization workshop with a client executive and getting into the console to fix the architecture driving the spend.
You understand that FinOps outcomes are only as strong as the technical foundation beneath them. You bring real world experience architecting and operating workloads on at least one major cloud platform, and you know how to translate cost findings into architectural remediation, not just a report. You have guided clients through the organizational and technical work of building a durable cost governance capability, and you are now extending that discipline into how enterprises manage the economics of AI infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Delivery Execution
  • Own delivery of FinOps engagements from discovery through realization, including maturity assessment, tooling implementation (Cloudability, CloudHealth, native cost tools), cost allocation models, and optimization realization
  • Provide hands on cloud architecture expertise on at least one hyperscaler (AWS, Azure, or GCP) to translate cost findings into technical remediation, including rightsizing, reserved capacity strategy, architecture refactoring, and workload placement
  • Regularly work across multiple concurrent client engagements, providing FinOps quality assurance on FinOps adjacent work
  • Have a growing awareness of emerging FinOps for AI practices, including cost governance for GPU consumption, model inference spend, and AI infrastructure economics, to support engagements as they arise

Solution Development
  • Partner with Solution Owner to define and continuously improve WWT's FinOps delivery process, including reference architectures, delivery playbooks, assessment frameworks, and reusable delivery assets
  • Partner with Solution Owner to develop and maintain SOW templates, LOE models, and scope frameworks that enable delivery teams to structure and price FinOps engagements consistently
  • Partner with Solution Owner to align FinOps offerings to client demand signals, competitive positioning, and cloud partner co investment opportunities
  • Support Solution Owner in building and maturing WWT's standalone cloud cost optimization offering, contributing methodology and delivery IP the practice can reuse

Pre Sales SME Support
  • Support creation and validation of FinOps domain SOWs, LOEs, and technical proposals; identify scope gaps, risk patterns, and pricing inconsistencies before they reach the client
  • Support RFP and RFI responses as the FinOps subject matter expert, providing solution narratives and differentiators grounded in WWT's actual delivery experience
  • Support cloud provider field teams and WWT account executives in positioning FinOps offerings and shaping pursuit strategies for strategic accounts
