Position Overview:
Under the guidance and supervision of the Manager, Patient Financial Services, the Intern, PFS will receive training in the fundamental aspects of medical billing and collections. This role offers progressive learning opportunities, focusing on insurance payer requirements, patient advocacy principles, and the performance of demographic and payer research to support the revenue cycle process.
Job Summary:
  • Depending upon the PFS team assigned, the Intern will primarily complete the following tasks:
  • Basic working knowledge of HCPCS, CPT, ICD-9/ICD-10 codes and medical terminology
  • Demonstrate the ability to contact insurance and government agencies to obtain eligibility, to process authorizations or discuss benefits and billing requirements
  • Identify appropriate contacts and communicate in a professional manner with all facilities and first responders to obtain demographic information for billing
  • Prepare and submit clean insurance claims to payers electronically and by paper, as required
  • Monitor claim status and follow up on unpaid or rejected claims to ensure timely reimbursement
  • Follow up on outstanding insurance and patient account balances to ensure timely reimbursement
  • Communicate with insurance companies to resolve denied, delayed, or underpaid claims
  • Document all collection activity and payer correspondence within the billing system
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and customer service when interacting with patients and payers
  • Review medical documentation to assign accurate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes for diagnoses, procedures, and services
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding changes, payer requirements, billing guidelines and industry compliance regulations
  • Protect patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations in all billing, collection and coding activities
  • Complying with Company HS&E policy and procedures
  • Responsible for supporting company Safety Management Systems activities
  • Understand and provide visible support of Destination Zero
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

  • $16.59/hr

The Successful Candidate Will Have:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Must be participating in an education-related internship with a certified program.
  • Must have knowledge of general office procedures using office equipment
  • Must have general PC skills and some knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel
  • Must have prior experience with email and using the web
  • This position is designated Safety Sensitive for purposes of the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act.
