Financial Reporting Manager

Atlanta, GA

The Financial Reporting Manager is responsible for leading a team of accountants who fulfill financial reporting obligations for Southern Company Gas, a company registered with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, and its four reporting segments: Gas Distribution Operations, Gas Marketing Services, Gas Pipeline Services, and Corporate. Responsibilities include providing accurate and timely monthly management reporting; quarterly and annual filings with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission; annual reporting to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for three local distribution companies; preparation of subsidiary financial statements; and support for annual compliance filings and other financial reporting initiatives.

This position is responsible for ensuring that financial statements comply with the requirements of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The Financial Reporting Manager will also coordinate with internal and external auditors regarding quarterly and annual audit procedures and provide support to Southern Financial Reporting, Southern Company Gas leadership, the Southern Company Gas Board of Directors, and the Controls and Compliance Committee.

Additionally, this role partners across multiple teams to support all financial reporting obligations for Southern Company Gas. This position is located in Atlanta, Georgia and requires an in-office presence four days per week, subject to change based on business needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of three to four accounting professionals responsible for fulfilling the financial reporting obligations of Southern Company Gas using Oracle Cloud applications and reporting platforms such as Workiva.
  • Lead and oversee the preparation and review of monthly management reports, quarterly and annual filings with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, annual filings with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, subsidiary financial statements, and annual compliance filings.
  • Oversee and review analyses of financial transactions and operating results.
  • Ensure compliance with all requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, including the compilation of internal control evidence and the review and approval of internal control activities performed by direct reports.
  • Support audits and financial statement reviews for Southern Company Gas and its subsidiaries.
  • Drive innovation and identify opportunities to improve processes and increase workflow efficiency in a dynamic environment.
  • Foster employee growth and development through coaching, training, performance management, and ongoing feedback.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or a related field is required.
  • Master's degree or other advanced degree is preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant designation or equivalent professional certification is preferred.

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Ten or more years of accounting or financial reporting experience required.
  • Strong proficiency in applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and the rules and reporting requirements of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission required.
  • Demonstrated experience with external financial reporting, including Current Report filings, financial statement preparation, and financial statement review required.
  • Strong understanding of financial transaction analysis and the evaluation of financial results required.
  • Experience with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, specifically Disclosure Controls and Procedures, preferred.
  • Experience using Oracle Cloud and Workiva preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the natural gas or electric utility industry and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Uniform System of Accounts preferred.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and developing employees required.
