Job Title: Developmentย Directorย 

The Development Director will lead EPIโ€™s fundraising strategy and operations, deepen and expand philanthropic support, and bring outstanding organizational and process-management skills to ensure fundraising systems, timelines, and workflows are effective, disciplined, and scalable. This is a senior leadership role that will collaborate across departments to build a sustainable, diversified revenue base for EPIโ€™s mission-driven work.ย ย 

The Development Director supervisesย twoย staffโ€”ย the Associate Director of Development and the Senior Development Associateโ€”and isย a part of the senior management team, reporting to the Executive Vice President.ย 

This position isย in our Washington, DC office and is on a hybridย schedule with in-person work at least two daysย per week (currently Tuesday and Wednesday).ย 

What You Will Doย 

The main responsibilities of the Development Director:ย 

Fundraising Strategy & Leadershipย 

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy and annual work plan to meet revenue goals.ย ย 
  • Equip senior leaders withย timelyย tools, well-researched briefings, andย accurateย analysis for effective donor conversations.ย 
  • Partner withย theย President, Executive Vice President,ย and senior leadership to align fundraising priorities with organizational strategy.ย 

Donor Cultivation, Solicitation & Stewardshipย 

  • Identify, cultivate,ย solicit, and steward new and existing donors including foundations, high-net-worth individuals,ย small dollar donors, andย unions.ย ย 
  • Oversee stewardship plans that strengthen donor loyalty and long-term support.ย 

Grant Writing & Managementย 

  • Lead proposal development, submissions, and reporting to institutional funders.ย ย 
  • Ensureย timelyย acknowledgment of awards, compliance with funder requirements, and high-quality impact reporting.ย 
  • Work closely with EPIโ€™s Finance teamย to ensure grant tracking and management is aligned andย accurate.ย 

Support Board Engagement on Fundraisingย 

  • Support EPIโ€™s President in engagingย and informingย theย Boardย on development,ย fundraising goals, pipeline health, andย stewardshipย strategies.ย ย 
  • Communications & External Representationย 
  • Work closely with communications staff to craft compelling fundraising collateral, impact reports, donor stories, and case statements.ย ย 
  • Represent EPI at events, meetings, and in networks that advance visibility and fundraising outcomes.ย 

Team Management & Infrastructureย 

  • Design, implement, and continuously improve development systems, processes, and workflows to support efficient fundraising operations, strong coordination across teams, and clear accountability.ย 
  • Ensure high standards of organization, documentation, and project management across proposals, donor engagement, reporting, and stewardship.ย 
  • Provide ongoing guidance and motivation to the development team and provide oversight to consultants as needed.
  • Evaluate the development team's performance and provide opportunities for personal and professional growth at varying points in their career trajectories.ย

  • Familiarity with donor CRM platforms (e.g., Raiserโ€™s Edge).ย ย 

  • Experience supportingย senior leadership in fundraising roles.ย ย 

  • A spirit ofย curiosity and a commitment to continuous learning that supports a deep understanding of EPIโ€™s research, policy priorities, and organizational strategy. While program staff and senior leadership typically lead funder briefings, the successful candidate will develop the insight and institutional knowledge needed toย identifyย strategic fundraising opportunities, shape compelling cases for support, and design proactive fundraising strategies aligned with EPIโ€™s priorities.ย 

Experience:ย Minimumย 7โ€“10+ yearsย of nonprofit fundraising experience with a strongย track recordย of meeting and exceeding revenue goals.ย 

EPI is a unionized workplace with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU).ย 

This position is not in the bargaining unit andย reports to the Executiveย Vice President.ย ย 

The Development Director supervises unionized staffโ€”ย the Associate Director of Development and the Senior Development Associateโ€”and isย a part of the senior management team.ย ย 

Compensation & Benefitsย 

The salary for this position ranges from $145,000-$175,000, dependent on experience, plus benefits.โ€ฏย ย 

EPI offers an excellent benefits package, including generous paid time off, a 9.25% employer-provided 401k retirement contribution, partial tuition reimbursement,ย twelveย weeks of parental leave, and fully employer-funded medical, vision, dental, short- and long-term disability, and life insurance for individual employees.โ€ฏย 

As a condition of employment, EPI requires all staff to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination which meets the guidelinesย asย defined by D.C. Health.ย
