Job description

Department: Finance & Accounting | Reports to: Chief Executive Officer | Employment Type: Full-Time | Location: Remote (U.S.), with periodic travel to Boston!
About CapNexus

CapNexus is a technology services and consulting firm delivering cloud, AI, and enterprise implementation services to clients across retail, technology, and adjacent industries. As an AWS partner and AI-first practice, we help organizations modernize their operations and adopt emerging technology. We hold ourselves to the same standard internally — we run a lean, modern, automation-forward back office, and we are building a finance function to match.

Position Summary

We are seeking an AI-native Controller to own and modernize CapNexus's accounting and financial reporting function. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who not only closes the books accurately and on time, but who instinctively reaches for AI and automation to do it faster, cleaner, and with better insight. You will own the accounting operation end to end, build real-time reporting, evaluate and implement modern finance tooling, and partner with leadership (and our investors and lenders) to deliver reporting they can trust. You will report to the CEO and work closely with business- unit leaders.

Key Responsibilities

          Accounting Operations & Close

  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close and deliver accurate financial statements on an accelerated timeline.

  • Manage the general ledger, AR, AP, payroll, revenue recognition (ASC 606), and account reconciliations.

  • Oversee and review the work of CapNexus's accounting team and outsourced accounting partner, driving accuracy and accountability.

  • Establish and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and audit readiness.

    Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Produce management and board reporting packages, KPI scorecards, and cash dashboards.

  • Support FP&A: budgeting, reforecasting, variance analysis, and cash-flow forecasting.

  • Own the chart of accounts and ensure data integrity across systems.

    AI-Native Finance & Systems

  • Evaluate, select, and implement AI-enabled tools to automate the close, reconciliations, reporting, and AP/AR workflows.

  • Design and maintain automated, real-time reporting dashboards spanning financial and operational metrics.

  • Continuously redesign finance workflows to reduce manual effort and cycle time through AI and automation, and measure the results.

  • Champion data hygiene and system integrations across ERP, billing, CRM, and expense platforms.

    Investor, Lender & Stakeholder Reporting

  • Prepare investor, PE sponsor, and lender reporting packages, including covenant compliance.

  • Support due diligence, quality-of-earnings, and external audit processes.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA strongly preferred.

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years as a Controller or Assistant

    Controller.

  • Deep U.S. GAAP knowledge and demonstrated ownership of a full-cycle close.

  • Hands-on experience with modern ERP/accounting systems (e.g., NetSuite, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, or Xero).

  • Demonstrated use of AI and automation tools in a finance or accounting context — for example close automation, AI bookkeeping, BI/dashboarding, or LLM-assisted workflows.

  • Advanced Excel and financial-modeling skills; comfort working directly with data.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to translate numbers into decisions for non-finance leaders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a private-equity-held / PE-backed business (portfolio company) — strongly preferred, including sponsor and lender reporting cadences.

  • Experience in a professional-services, consulting, or technology company with project-based revenue and ASC 606 recognition.

  • Track record of selecting and implementing finance technology and leading finance-transformation initiatives.

  • Experience managing an outsourced or offshore accounting function.

  • Familiarity with SaaS/services metrics and AWS or cloud cost economics is a plus.

What Success Looks Like (First 6–12 Months)

  • A faster, more reliable close and a board/investor reporting cadence leadership can count on.

  • At least one meaningful AI or automation initiative live, with measurable reduction in manual effort

    or cycle time.

  • Real-time dashboards in place for cash, revenue, margin, and key operational KPIs.

  • A clean audit and diligence-ready financials, with well-documented controls and policies.

  • A clear, objective assessment of the current outsourced accounting partner and finance tech stack, with a roadmap for improvement.

Why CapNexus
  • Own and build a modern finance function from the ground up in an AI-first company.

  • High-visibility role partnering directly with the CEO and business-unit leaders.

  • A mandate to adopt the best modern tooling — you won't be fighting to modernize, you'll be leading it.
