Financial Controller

Department: Accounting & Finance
Reports To: President / Owner


Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated Financial Controller to oversee the company's accounting operations, job costing, and financial reporting. This individual will play a key role in improving profitability, strengthening financial controls, implementing accounting processes, and providing timely financial information to support management decisions.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting professional with experience in construction or manufacturing, project accounting, and job costing. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to grow with an established company while helping modernize its financial operations.


Primary Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Management

  • Oversee the daily accounting functions including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, and General Ledger.
  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Maintain the integrity of the company's accounting records.
  • Manage cash flow and working capital.
  • Coordinate annual financial reviews and tax preparation with the company's CPA.

Job Costing & Profitability Analysis

  • Maintain and improve the company's job costing system.
  • Analyze labor, material, subcontractor, equipment, and overhead costs.
  • Review project profitability and identify cost trends.
  • Work closely with Estimating and Project Management to improve pricing accuracy.
  • Develop job profitability reports for management.

Accounting Software & Process Improvement

  • Manage and optimize Sage accounting software.
  • Improve accounting procedures and financial reporting processes.
  • Develop financial dashboards and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Assist with software implementation and workflow improvements.
  • Recommend efficiencies through automation and technology.

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare monthly management reports.
  • Monitor Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting.
  • Analyze financial performance by department and project.
  • Present financial information to company leadership.

Internal Controls

  • Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures.
  • Improve purchasing and financial approval processes.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and company policies.
  • Monitor financial risk and recommend improvements.

Leadership

  • Provide guidance and support to accounting staff.
  • Partner with Sales, Project Management, Manufacturing, and Installation.
  • Assist ownership with strategic financial planning and operational decision-making.


Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in construction, manufacturing, or another project-based industry.
  • Strong understanding of job costing and project accounting.
  • Experience preparing financial statements.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Preferred

  • Experience with Sage accounting software.
  • Construction or manufacturing accounting experience.
  • Experience with AIA billing and Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting.
  • Experience implementing accounting systems or process improvements.
  • CPA designation is a plus but not required.
