Financial Contractor information

What does a Financial Contractor do?

A Financial Contractor is an independent professional who provides financial services to businesses or individuals on a contract basis. They may handle tasks such as bookkeeping, financial analysis, tax preparation, budgeting, or consulting. Unlike full-time employees, they typically work with multiple clients and have more control over their schedules and workload. Financial Contractors are often hired for specialized expertise or to assist during peak financial periods.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Financial Contractor position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Financial Contractor, you need strong analytical skills, in-depth knowledge of financial regulations, and a background in accounting or finance, often supported by a relevant degree or certification (such as CPA or CFA). Familiarity with financial software like QuickBooks, Excel, and ERP systems is typically required. Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving abilities help a contractor effectively manage multiple clients and projects. These skills ensure accurate financial analysis, compliance with regulations, and the ability to build trust with clients.

What types of clients or industries do Financial Contractors typically work with?

Financial Contractors often serve a variety of clients, including small businesses, corporations, startups, and nonprofit organizations, spanning diverse industries such as healthcare, technology, real estate, and manufacturing. Depending on their expertise, contractors might manage tax preparation, financial planning, audits, or interim CFO responsibilities. They may work independently or as part of a consulting firm, adapting to each client’s specific financial requirements and operational structures. This versatility allows Financial Contractors to develop broad experience and expand their professional network while addressing unique challenges across different sectors.

About 48 Electric

48 Electric is a mission-critical electrical contractor specializing in data centers and other critical infrastructure projects throughout Arizona. We are committed to delivering high-quality electrical solutions while building a team of professionals who value safety, integrity, accountability, and excellence.

We're seeking an experienced Financial Controller to oversee the day-to-day accounting operations of our growing, project-driven organization. This is a high-impact leadership role reporting directly to the CFO, responsible for ensuring financial accuracy, driving job costing and WIP reporting, and providing the financial insight needed to support strategic growth.

If you're looking for an opportunity to make a significant impact within a rapidly expanding company, we'd love to hear from you.

What You'll Do

As our Financial Controller, you will:

  • Manage all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance and the monthly close process.
  • Oversee job costing and monthly Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting using percentage-of-completion accounting.
  • Monitor project profitability by identifying cost overruns, underbilling, overbillings, and financial risks.
  • Partner with the CFO on budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and cash flow management.
  • Track change orders, contract billing terms, schedules of values (SOVs), and project financial performance.
  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Support external audits, lender reporting, and surety bonding requirements.
  • Manage company cash position, banking relationships, and credit facilities.
  • Maintain certificates of insurance, surety schedules, and policy renewals.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, sales and use tax requirements, payroll taxes, and 1099 reporting.
  • Oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, purchase orders, and vendor/customer accounting processes.
  • Help develop and mentor future accounting staff as the finance department continues to grow.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and construction accounting principles.
  • Experience with percentage-of-completion accounting, job costing, and WIP reporting.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Microsoft 365 (especially Excel, Outlook, and Teams).
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check and pre-employment drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA, CCIFP (Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional), or CMA designation.
  • Experience with Procore or other construction ERP/accounting platforms.
  • Previous experience in electrical contracting, commercial construction, or mission-critical/data center projects.
  • Experience managing surety relationships, bonding capacity, and lender reporting.
  • Familiarity with Monday.com or similar project/workflow management software.

Benefits

We offer a competitive benefits package, including:

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • Professional growth opportunities
  • A clear path to grow into a CFO role as the company continues to expand
  • The opportunity to play a key leadership role in one of Arizona's fastest-growing mission-critical electrical contractors
