What is a finance project?

Finance projects refer to planned initiatives or tasks within the finance sector, typically focusing on managing budgets, investments, risks, or financial systems for organizations. These projects may involve implementing new financial software, conducting audits, analyzing financial data, or developing strategies to optimize financial performance. Finance projects can be undertaken by businesses, governments, or nonprofit organizations and often require cross-functional collaboration. Successful finance projects help organizations achieve their financial goals, ensure regulatory compliance, and improve overall financial health.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working on finance projects, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working on finance projects often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, evolving regulatory requirements, and the need to coordinate across multiple departments. Managing large data sets and ensuring accuracy under pressure can also be demanding. To address these challenges, it's important to establish clear communication channels, use reliable project management tools, and stay updated on industry regulations. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams and proactively identifying potential roadblocks can help ensure project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a finance project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Finance Project Manager, you need a solid background in finance, budgeting, and project management, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in finance or a related field and often a PMP or similar certification. Familiarity with financial modeling tools, ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, and project management software such as Microsoft Project is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, leadership, and effective communication are standout soft skills for coordinating teams and conveying complex financial information. These skills ensure successful project delivery, sound financial oversight, and alignment with organizational goals.

Job description

At Amazon, we're working to be the most customer-centric company on earth. Operations is at the heart of what we do, delivering hundreds of thousands of packages each day and fulfilling customer orders from all over the world. Amazon is seeking a Finance Manager to help own critical functions within the rapidly growing Fleet Finance Organization. This Finance Manager will partner with Global Fleet & Products team to build a fleet that scales with the network, provides flexible capacity as needed, supports current and future driver models, and consistently improves products and services that increase utilization and reduces the burden of managing vehicles.
This role is more than finance: it requires ability to invent, go beyond the standard business rules to "experiment" and "conceive" together with the business partners to find financial sustainable solutions. The successful candidate will leverage AI-powered tools including Orcha, Aza, QuickSuite, and other emerging technologies to accelerate analysis, enhance decision-making, and drive operational efficiency.
As a member of a growing team, you will deal with a high level of ambiguity and changing priorities. The successful candidate will maneuver through the ambiguity, communicate effectively across teams and levels, while balancing the needs and requirements of internal and external customers. Flexibility and the ability to prioritize in a changing business environment will also be key.
Key job responsibilities
Strategic Partnership
• Partner across Operations and the Business to develop a long-term fleet strategy while optimizing for cost & on-road vehicle efficiency
• Partner/Support the business during contract negotiations with outside suppliers for financial valuations and trade-off decisions
• Use AI tools to draft and refine financial narratives, business cases, and strategic documents that align with Amazon's writing principles
• Experience supporting cross-functional projects with demonstrated expertise in leading without authority to achieve results
Financial Modeling
• Build complex financial models (NPV) for large scale fleet acquisitions/pilot programs (e.g. buy vs. lease vehicle)
• Leverage Orcha and QuickSuite to automate data extraction, analysis, and reporting, reducing manual effort by identifying patterns and anomalies in financial data
• Identify and develop key business opportunities and drive efficiency while balancing customer promise
• Establish a financial framework with ambiguous project inputs and requirements across a diverse set of partner teams; drive cost improvements to the requirements gathering process
• Apply AI-powered analytics tools to generate scenario analyses and sensitivity models that inform strategic decisions
FP&A
• You use solid financial knowledge and business acumen to build financial models and analyses with little guidance and draw conclusions and make recommendations that deliver results, and drive improvements. You manage development of weekly and monthly financial reviews, forecasting, and reporting models and their continuous innovation and communicating to Financial and Operations partners.
• You utilize AI assistants to streamline document creation, ensure consistency in reporting formats, and accelerate the production of executive-ready materials. You explore and implement AI tools to automate repetitive financial processes, allowing more time for strategic analysis and business partnership.
• You identify and solve complex data integrity issues and collaborate with stakeholders on resolution, insisting on the highest standards. You create effective business partnership, manage competing priorities, and provide guidance during unexpected events.
Business Analysis
• You identify and implement opportunities to resolve finance issues, improve, scale, or simplify finance tools, technology, and processes across teams and organizations. You understand how data flows through our financial platforms and know the right data to use for analysis, and establish a source of truth.
• You adopt and champion AI-powered tools to enhance data analysis capabilities, automate routine tasks, and uncover insights that drive business decisions. You experiment with emerging AI technologies to improve forecast accuracy and operational efficiency.
• You simplify and centralize process improvement and reporting to allow business partners and customers to take action quickly.
People
• You take part in hiring and developing activities and mentor new team members.
• You coach team members on effective use of AI tools to enhance their productivity and analytical capabilities.
• You have backbone and challenge business partner plans and assumptions when needed.
• You communicate data in a clear, concise, and unambiguous manner both verbally and in writing.
• You can articulate complex finance issues to non-Finance partners.
• You positively contribute to work/life harmony on your team and find creative solutions to solve gaps for your team.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business, economics, or a related analytical field (e.g., engineering, math, computer science)
- Experience with AI/ML technologies
- 5+ years of finance experience, or Master's degree and 3+ years of finance experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- MBA, or CFA
- Experience delivering forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis, and data interpretation of results
- Experience working with large-scale data mining and reporting tools (examples: SQL, MS Access, Essbase, Cognos) and other financial systems (examples: Oracle, SAP, Lawson, JD Edwards)
- Experience participating in continuous improvement projects in your team to scale and improve controllership with measurable results
- Knowledge of statistical modeling
- Demonstrated experience using AI tools (such as Aza, Orcha, QuickSuite, or similar platforms) to enhance financial analysis and reporting
