What is a finance executive?

A finance executive is an upper-level manager who provides financial services to a company. At a small business, you may be an all-around finance executive. In a larger organization, you usually fulfill a particular role, such as treasurer, finance officer, controller, or credit manager. As a finance executive, your job duties include overseeing income and expenses, monitoring financial transactions, creating and analyzing financial reports, and taking actions to ensure profitability. The qualifications for a career as a finance executive include a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or economics, leadership skills, and significant professional experience in the finance industry.

What are some common challenges finance executives face when working with cross-functional teams?

Finance Executives often collaborate with departments such as operations, sales, and IT, which can present challenges related to aligning financial goals with broader business objectives. Differences in priorities, communication styles, and varying levels of financial literacy across teams may require Finance Executives to adapt their approach to ensure clarity and consensus. Successfully navigating these dynamics involves strong interpersonal skills, the ability to translate complex financial data into actionable insights, and fostering a collaborative environment to drive organizational success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a finance executive, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Finance Executive, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of financial management principles, and typically a degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Familiarity with financial modeling software, ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, and relevant certifications such as CFA or CPA are highly valued. Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and effective communication skills help set top performers apart in this role. These abilities are vital for making informed financial decisions, guiding teams, and driving organizational growth.

What is the difference between Finance Executive vs Financial Analyst?

Job description

Chief Financial Officer (CFO) – Electrical & General ConstructionConfidential Executive SearchLocation: Carson City / Reno, Nevada | On-Site Executive RoleBase Compensation: $350,000 – $500,000 + Executive BonusRelocation Assistance Available for Qualified CandidatesAbout the Opportunity

Elite Executive Solutions is conducting a confidential executive search for an accomplished Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join a rapidly growing electrical and general construction organization based in Northern Nevada.

This is a significant executive leadership opportunity for a sophisticated financial leader who wants to play an integral role in the continued growth and evolution of a dynamic construction business.

Reporting directly to executive leadership, the CFO will provide strategic oversight of the organization's financial strategy, accounting and reporting, forecasting, cash management, financial controls, risk management, and overall financial infrastructure.

This individual will serve as much more than the organization's senior financial officer. The CFO will operate as a strategic business partner, helping leadership evaluate opportunities, strengthen operational performance, manage growth, and build the financial platform necessary to support the company's long-term vision.

Why This Opportunity?

This is not a traditional CFO role focused solely on accounting and reporting.

The organization is entering an important stage of growth, creating an opportunity for the right executive to have a meaningful impact on the future of the business.

The successful CFO will have the opportunity to:

  • Partner directly with executive leadership on business strategy and long-term growth.
  • Build and strengthen the financial infrastructure required to support a growing construction organization.
  • Influence capital allocation, investment decisions, risk management, and strategic planning.
  • Develop scalable financial processes, controls, reporting, and systems.
  • Provide greater financial visibility into projects, operations, margins, cash flow, and organizational performance.
  • Build and mentor a high-performing finance and accounting organization.
  • Help position the company for its next stage of expansion.

For an executive who enjoys building, scaling, improving, and influencing, this represents a compelling opportunity to help shape an organization rather than simply inherit a mature finance function.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic financial leadership to the CEO and executive leadership team.
  • Lead the company's financial planning, forecasting, budgeting, accounting, reporting, treasury, and cash-management functions.
  • Develop and execute financial strategies that support organizational growth and long-term profitability.
  • Provide executive leadership with timely financial analysis, business intelligence, and recommendations to support major business decisions.
  • Oversee project financial performance, including revenue recognition, forecasting, cash flow, margin analysis, backlog, work-in-progress reporting, and profitability.
  • Strengthen financial visibility across projects, business units, and operating functions.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate financial controls, policies, governance, and reporting standards.
  • Lead annual budgeting and long-range financial planning.
  • Oversee working capital, liquidity, banking relationships, bonding, insurance, and other financial partnerships.
  • Evaluate capital requirements and provide recommendations regarding investments and strategic initiatives.
  • Partner closely with operations and project leadership to improve financial performance and accountability.
  • Identify financial and operational risks and develop strategies to mitigate exposure.
  • Evaluate and implement financial systems, technologies, reporting tools, and process improvements necessary to support continued growth.
  • Recruit, develop, mentor, and lead a high-performing finance and accounting team.
  • Establish meaningful KPIs and executive reporting that provide leadership with clear visibility into company performance.
  • Support strategic growth initiatives, including geographic expansion, new markets, partnerships, and potential acquisitions where applicable.
  • Maintain productive relationships with banks, auditors, tax advisors, insurance providers, bonding partners, and other external stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • Significant progressive financial leadership experience, including experience operating at the CFO, Divisional CFO, EVP/SVP Finance, or comparable executive level.
  • Strong preference for experience within electrical construction, general contracting, MEP, mission-critical/data center construction, specialty contracting, engineering, or another complex project-based construction environment.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting a growing or rapidly scaling organization.
  • Deep understanding of construction/project accounting and the financial dynamics of large, complex projects.
  • Strong command of budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, financial reporting, internal controls, and strategic planning.
  • Experience developing financial infrastructure, processes, teams, and systems capable of supporting organizational growth.
  • Proven ability to translate complex financial information into actionable business recommendations.
  • Strong understanding of operational and project-level financial performance.
  • Experience managing banking, bonding, insurance, audit, tax, and other external financial relationships.
  • Demonstrated success building and developing finance and accounting teams.
  • Exceptional business judgment, executive presence, communication skills, and leadership ability.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and growth-oriented environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline required.
  • MBA, CPA, or other relevant advanced credentials are highly desirable.
The Ideal Executive

The ideal candidate combines financial sophistication with a builder's mentality.

We are seeking someone who understands that exceptional financial leadership in construction requires more than producing accurate financial statements. This individual should understand the relationship between the field, projects, operations, backlog, labor, cash flow, risk, margins, and enterprise strategy.

The successful candidate will be comfortable moving between the boardroom and the operational details of the business — challenging assumptions, identifying opportunities, developing people, and helping executive leadership make informed decisions.

This individual should thrive in an environment where the organization is growing and where processes, systems, and teams must continuously evolve to support that growth.

Compensation & Executive Package

The organization is prepared to offer an exceptional executive compensation package commensurate with the importance of this position and the experience of the selected candidate.

  • Base Salary: $350,000 – $500,000
  • Executive Performance Bonus
  • Comprehensive executive benefits package
  • Relocation assistance available for qualified candidates
  • Significant opportunity to influence the long-term growth and direction of the organization

Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, leadership background, and overall alignment with the position.

Confidentiality

This search is being conducted confidentially by Elite Executive Solutions.

We understand that many qualified candidates for this opportunity are currently employed in senior leadership positions. All inquiries and conversations will be handled with the appropriate level of discretion and confidentiality.
