What is a finance engineer?

Finance engineers, also known as financial engineers or quantitative analysts, use mathematical models, computer science, and statistical techniques to solve financial problems and develop new financial products. They often work for banks, investment firms, hedge funds, insurance companies, or fintech companies, designing algorithms for trading, risk management, and asset valuation. Their expertise helps organizations make data-driven decisions and manage financial risks more effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a finance engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Finance Engineer, you need a solid background in mathematics, finance, and computer science, often supported by a relevant degree such as finance, engineering, or quantitative disciplines. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or R, financial modeling tools, and platforms such as Bloomberg Terminal is typically required, along with certifications like CFA or FRM being advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you interpret data and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial for developing innovative financial solutions, managing risk, and supporting data-driven decision-making in complex financial environments.

How does a finance engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams within an organization?

Finance Engineers often work closely with teams such as data analytics, risk management, IT, and portfolio management to develop and implement financial models and automated trading systems. They contribute their quantitative expertise to solve complex financial problems, ensuring that technological solutions align with business goals. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as Finance Engineers need to translate financial requirements into technical specifications and vice versa. This cross-functional work environment provides valuable opportunities to learn from other disciplines and develop a well-rounded understanding of both finance and technology.

Job description

About Numeric
Every business relies on accounting. Yet most software in the space was built in the early 2000s - clunky, slow, and far behind the curve on AI. Today, accountants are facing a growing, unsolved data problem as a consequence of complexity, data, and system fragmentation - and they lack the tools to solve it. The problems are real, hard, and increasingly urgent. But they're solvable.
Enter Numeric - the modern financial data platform for accounting and finance. Weaving together data, workflows, and AI-first solutions, we're empowering accounting teams to achieve verifiable, detailed financial data faster and make business decisions with greater confidence.
We have strong product market fit and a growing base of customers who love our product - including Anthropic, Plaid, Brex, Betterment, and many more. We're backed by top-tier investors including Menlo Ventures, IVP, Founders Fund, and 8VC, along with founders and executives from Ramp, Segment, and other category-defining companies.
The Role
We believe that the best finance professionals have always been the ones that deeply understand how data flows through their company's business, and have the technical acumen to build systems to harness that flow of data to both report on what was and forecast what will be.
At Numeric, our mission is to build world class tools for that vision of finance and accounting.
Numeric's internal finance engineer will shape processes across the finance lifecycle including procure-to-pay, quote-to-cash, month-end close and reporting, and forecasting & budgeting. Beyond internal finances, this role will be expected to provide feedback on the tools and systems that Numeric is building to transform the accounting space. You will partner closely with our founders and leaders across the company to not only operate the business, but provide feedback to build Numeric's products.
This role is ideal for someone with a corporate accounting or FP&A background and/or experience building 0-to-1 within a finance team at an early-stage startup. You should want to manage the system and improve it to meet the evolving demands of our business.
This is a high-visibility, high-ownership role with direct impact on the trajectory of the company.
This is a 100% in-person role based in our San Francisco or New York City office.
What You'll Do
  • Build a world class finance function - through both Numeric's products, and by building internal tools, our goal is to raise the ceiling of what "good" means for the office of the CFO
  • Operate day-to-day - whether procure-to-pay, quote-to-cash, or month end close, we need to model what a best-in-class finance org looks like for our customers.
  • Clarify decision making - Through reporting, budgeting, and scenario planning, your job is to communicate performance, set constraints for leaders, and have a perspective on how to achieve our goals.
  • Partner with executive stakeholders - Work with Numeric's leaders across Engineering, Product and go-to-market to provide insight on department level P&L performance.
What You Bring
  • Experience & Drive - 3-8 years in corporate accounting, FP&A, or finance at an early-stage startup with a hunger to take on high-impact work.
  • Accounting expertise - You get energy from the craft of accounting, and a willingness to design finance and accounting processes from first principles.
  • Analytical Acumen - Strong data analysis, and Excel skills, with experience interpreting and working with financial data. SQL skills are a plus. Comfort building tools with LLMs is a must.
  • Communication - Ability to distill operational complexity into clear insights with actionable takeaways for all company stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving - A structured thinker who can break down ambiguous challenges, find practical solutions, and drive execution.
Why Join Numeric?
  • Hands-on impact - Work directly with leadership on high-priority financial initiatives.
  • Career growth - Gain experience across FP&A, operations, and strategic finance, with exposure to executive decision-making.
  • Top-tier customers and investors - Be part of a company trusted by leading finance teams and backed by world-class investors.
  • Fast-moving, high-impact environment - Operate with autonomy, iterate quickly, and help scale financial operations from the ground up.
  • Competitive compensation - Salary, equity, health coverage, retirement plans, and unlimited PTO.
