Film Stylist information

What is a film stylist?

Film stylists are professionals responsible for designing and selecting the wardrobe, accessories, and overall visual appearance of characters in movies, television shows, and other filmed productions. They work closely with directors, costume designers, and actors to create looks that enhance the story and bring authenticity to the characters. Film stylists research fashion trends, source clothing and props, and often oversee fittings and on-set adjustments. Their work helps set the tone, time period, and personality of each character, contributing significantly to the visual storytelling of a film.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a film stylist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Film Stylist, you need a strong background in fashion, costume design, and visual storytelling, often supported by a degree in fashion, design, or a related field. Familiarity with wardrobe management software, sourcing platforms, and knowledge of fabric care are typically required, and specialized certifications in costume design can be advantageous. Creativity, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills help a stylist collaborate effectively with directors, actors, and other crew members. These skills ensure characters' appearances align with the film's vision, enhancing authenticity and visual impact.

What are some typical challenges a film stylist faces when working on set, and how can they be managed?

Film Stylists often face challenges such as last-minute script changes, tight shooting schedules, and limited access to desired wardrobe pieces. Managing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, resourcefulness, and the ability to quickly adapt creative solutions on the fly. Collaborating closely with the costume designer, director, and actors is key to ensuring continuity and maintaining the visual integrity of each character. Building strong relationships with local vendors and rental houses can also help in sourcing items quickly and efficiently.

While both roles involve clothing, Film Stylists emphasize styling and coordination, whereas Costume Designers focus on designing and constructing costumes.

How do you become a film stylist?

To become a film stylist, individuals typically need a background in fashion, costume design, or visual arts, along with experience in styling or wardrobe management. Building a portfolio, gaining experience through internships or assistant roles, and developing strong knowledge of film production and costume history are important steps in entering the field.

How much do film stylists make?

Film stylists typically earn between $40,000 and $80,000 annually, with experienced professionals or those working on high-budget productions earning higher salaries. Compensation can vary based on location, experience, and the scope of the project, and many stylists work freelance or on a contract basis.

Job description

Company Description Rowan is a modern heritage apparel brand from California, founded by a collective of creatives from the clothing and film industries. Rooted in a story of legacy and wisdom passed between generations, Rowan designs timeless, seasonless staples with a modern touch for people of all genders. The brand focuses on effortless, flattering pieces—such as t-shirts, tanks, sweats, jeans, button-ups, and jackets—that serve as a versatile canvas for individual style. Rowan believes everyday essentials should feel elevated and meaningful rather than mundane. Central to the company’s mission is giving back to fatherhood, with 1% of revenue donated to charities supporting healthy fatherhood initiatives.

Role Description The Stylist is a full-time, on-site role based in Newport Beach, CA, responsible for delivering an outstanding in-store experience that reflects Rowan’s brand and values. In this role, the Stylist will greet and engage customers, assess their needs, and provide personalized styling recommendations that highlight Rowan’s timeless, layered essentials. The Stylist will curate looks for diverse body types and style preferences, support merchandising by maintaining visual standards, and ensure the store is organized and inviting. Day-to-day responsibilities include assisting with fittings, coordinating outfits for events or photo shoots as needed, and sharing product knowledge to help customers build a versatile wardrobe. The Stylist will also support basic operational tasks such as inventory checks, restocking, and collaborating with the store team to meet sales goals while fostering an inclusive, welcoming environment.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should possess strong styling and fashion sense, including experience creating cohesive looks, understanding fit and fabric, and advising customers on versatile wardrobe building.
  • Candidates should possess excellent customer service and communication skills, with the ability to listen actively, build rapport, and provide inclusive, respectful guidance to a diverse clientele.
  • Candidates should possess sales and retail skills, such as suggestive selling, handling POS transactions, and contributing to store performance targets.
  • Candidates should possess visual merchandising and presentation skills, including maintaining displays, organizing product, and ensuring the store reflects brand standards.
  • Candidates should possess general professional skills such as reliability, attention to detail, time management, and the ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • Relevant experience in fashion retail or personal styling is highly beneficial; familiarity with premium or contemporary apparel brands is a plus.
  • Ability to work on-site in Newport Beach, CA, with a flexible schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Comfort with basic technology (POS systems, scheduling tools) and a willingness to learn Rowan’s products, brand story, and mission around giving back to fatherhood.
