TITLE: Brush and Roll Painter
REPORTS TO: Foreman, Superintendent
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

LOCATION: Shipyard(s) & Customer Facilities
SUMMARY
Brush and Roll Painters are experienced in different coating systems applied to U.S. Navy Ships and Submarines during ship repair activities in U.S. Navy Shipyards as well as Private Shipyardd. Brush and Roll Painters assist in preparing the surfaces to be painted in accordance with Surface Preparation Guidelines, and apply coatings to the surfaces as directed in accordance with Manufacturer's guidelines, NAVSEA Requirements, and other applicable standards. Position also participates, as assigned, in abrasive and non abrasive removal of coatings systems and paint from surfaces as directed using power and non powered hand tools; cleans work areas as needed and directed to always maintain a safe work area; participates in preparing work areas prior to work, and breakdown of set ups after work is completed. Directly assigned to mix paint, assist paint spray teams, cleaning, striping, and to apply new coatings systems and paint through the use of paint brushes, rollers, and other hand held equipment used during application of coating systems to surfaces.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepare surfaces for coating application in accordance with paint manufacturer guidelines, customer specifications, and applicable industry standards, such as SP-11, SP-3, SP-2, and other standards.
  • Paint prepared surfaces using a variety of different types of coating, such as epoxy, polysiloxane, enamel, antifouling, and water-base material.
  • Stripe coat application in tanks, for example, additional layer of coating on all welds, edges, angles.
  • Utilize correct mix ratios in accordance with NAVSEA F-718 product data sheets and/or manufacturer recommended guidelines.
  • Complies with all local and job site specific regulations and guidelines regarding hazardous material disposal.
  • Perform visual inspections of previously applied coating systems, conduct proper repair on all coating discrepancies, such as holidays, heavy runs or sags, low dry film thickness, and fair in transitions between layers of coating, such as feathering.
  • Always protect existing ship's equipment and customer assets by installing protective coverings, such as rubber, plastic, paper, and painters tape. All installed coverings shall remain in good condition until all coating application is complete.
  • Support paint pump operator with equipment set-up and assist sprayers with pulling and tending spray lines during application.
  • Clean tanks and other spaces as directed using methods prescribed by supervisor including manually by hand, or using other debris removal equipment such as vacuum systems.
  • Operate pneumatic, electric, and other powered and non powered hand tools.
  • Use cleaning agents, pressure washers, industrial vacuums, hoses, mops, brooms, brushes, and other cleaning equipment.
  • Assist Structural trades personnel during metal work, welding, or other related activities, as assigned to such.
  • Monitor hot work operations and maintain compliance with all hot work permit requirements while assigned duties as Fire Watch.
  • Assist in the removal and installation of cables aboard vessels, follow steps as directed to ensure safe installation of cables without damaging cables.
  • Incidental operation of support material-handling equipment including forklifts.
  • Assist in Containment set up and assembly, and containment systems disassembly.
  • May assist teams applying other applications to steel work, lead handling, and environmental remediation.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
  • None

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & ATTRIBUTES
  • Knowledgeable in checking wet film mil (WFT) thickness being applied
  • Ability to follow instructions and provide consistent work
  • Basic understanding of NAVSEA Standard Item 009-32

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Formal or informal on the job training
  • 2+ years of experience in the application of coatings in the marine industry
  • OSHA 10 Maritime Standards (Company may provide)

WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, dusty conditions, wet and/or humid conditions, hazardous machinery, heights, confined spaces, precarious places, proximity to other employees.
  • Prolonged periods of standing, kneeling, bending, twisting, squatting
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull up to 50+ pounds (50 lbs occasionally, 25 lbs frequently, 10 lbs constantly)
  • Lifting includes from floor to waist, waist to shoulder, waist to overhead
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders
  • May be required to wear a respirator
  • Some travel may be required
