A Film Script Reader evaluates screenplays and provides coverage, which includes a summary and critique of the script's strengths, weaknesses, and market potential. Their feedback helps production companies, studios, and agencies decide which scripts to develop or purchase. Readers assess story structure, character development, dialogue, and overall marketability. This role is often freelance or entry-level, providing a stepping stone into the film industry. Strong analytical skills and a deep understanding of storytelling are essential for success.

What does a typical day look like for a film script reader?

A typical day for a Film Script Reader involves carefully reading several screenplays or teleplays, analyzing their plots, characters, and dialogue, and then writing coverage reports that assess the strengths and weaknesses of each script. You may work independently, often on tight deadlines, while coordinating with development executives, producers, or literary agents. The role can be a mix of in-office and remote work, depending on the employer. Readers may also participate in team meetings to discuss high-potential projects, providing input that helps shape what gets considered for production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the film script reader position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Film Script Reader, you need excellent analytical reading skills, a strong grasp of storytelling techniques, and often a degree in film studies, English, or a similar field. Familiarity with script coverage formats and industry-standard software like Final Draft or Movie Magic Screenwriter is often beneficial. Attention to detail, objectivity, and clear written communication are standout soft skills in this position. These capabilities ensure that script readers can provide insightful, actionable feedback that helps studios identify promising scripts and guide project development.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

  • Strong interest in one or more of our project areas with a desire to work in the entertainment industry

  • Relevant skills or majors such as writing, research, filmmaking, theater, producing, and marketing are a plus

  • Tech-savvy with the ability to learn new apps and workflows

  • Must be comfortable around dogs!

TOOLS YOU’LL USE

Asana, Slack, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Dropbox, Zoom

You don’t need to know every tool on day one—but you will be quick to learn new platforms and comfortable working in a structured, digital workflow.

  • International students: We accept applicants eligible for CPT and OPT work authorization (Entertainment-based majors only).

If this role feels like a stretch in all the right ways, we’d love to hear from you. Tell us how your skills, experience, and unique point of view can level up this team and the stories we’re bringing into the world.
