Figma Designer information

What is a Figma designer?

A Figma Designer is a professional who specializes in using Figma, a collaborative web-based design tool, to create user interfaces, prototypes, and design systems for digital products such as websites and mobile apps. They work closely with product managers, developers, and other designers to visualize concepts, design user experiences, and ensure design consistency. Figma Designers leverage the platform's collaborative features to streamline feedback and iterate designs efficiently. Their expertise includes UI/UX principles, prototyping, and often some knowledge of front-end development.

What is the difference between Figma Designer vs UI Designer?

AspectFigma DesignerUI Designer
Primary FocusCreating interactive prototypes and designing interfaces using FigmaDesigning visual elements and layouts for digital products
Tools & SkillsFigma, prototyping, collaboration featuresAdobe XD, Sketch, visual design, branding
Work EnvironmentCollaborative, often remote, using cloud-based toolsDesign studios, agencies, or in-house teams
Common Industry UsageWeb and app interface design, prototypingVisual design, branding, user interface creation

While both roles involve digital design, a Figma Designer specializes in creating interactive prototypes and interfaces primarily using Figma, emphasizing collaboration and prototyping. A UI Designer focuses on visual aesthetics, branding, and layout design, often using tools like Adobe XD or Sketch. Both roles are essential in product development but differ in their core responsibilities and tools used.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Figma designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Figma Designer, you need strong expertise in UI/UX design principles, visual design, and a portfolio demonstrating hands-on experience with digital products. Proficiency in Figma itself, as well as familiarity with design systems, prototyping tools, and sometimes basic front-end technologies, is essential. Excellent collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills help you work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. These abilities ensure that designs are not only visually appealing but also user-centered, functional, and efficiently integrated into modern product development workflows.

How does a Figma designer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a product development cycle?

As a Figma Designer, you will regularly collaborate with product managers, developers, and other designers to ensure cohesive and efficient design implementation. This often involves participating in design sprints, sharing prototypes for feedback, and conducting handoff meetings where detailed design specs are communicated to developers. Figma’s real-time collaboration features make it easy to gather input and iterate quickly, but it also means strong communication and flexibility are key to success. Expect to attend regular stand-ups, design reviews, and brainstorming sessions to align your work with the broader team’s objectives.

Are Figma designers in demand?

Figma designers are in high demand as many companies prioritize user experience and digital product design. Proficiency in Figma, along with skills in UI/UX design and collaboration tools, increases job opportunities in this field.

Job description

Who We're Looking For - Multimedia Designer

We are looking for a full-time Multimedia Designer to join our in-house creative team. You'll create branded visual content (graphics, illustrations, social media, video, and motion) across multiple consumer brands in our Owned and Operated portfolio, with primary focus on HighSpeedInternet.com and SatelliteInternet.com, plus occasional support on CableTV.com.

This role sits at a real inflection point in our craft. AI has lowered the floor: competent, "good enough" visual output is now instant and free. Raising the ceiling is what's left, and that's entirely on the designer. The tools have changed (AI image and video generation, Figma Motion, Buzz, Shaders, and Weave have collapsed what used to be distinct disciplines into one connected workflow), and the expectation of what a designer can produce in a week has expanded just as dramatically. What hasn't changed is the value of strong fundamentals: typography, color, composition, hierarchy, narrative, and brand systems. The tension between good enough and the raised ceiling is the role.

Are you a designer who thinks across formats? Are you as comfortable producing motion as you are static design? Are you fluent in graphic and motion design principles AND genuinely curious about AI tools as creative collaborators, not replacements? Do you have a point of view about your work, the kind that resists the "average" output AI tends to produce? If so, you may have found your new home.

APPLICANTS MUST INCLUDE PORTFOLIO TO BE CONSIDERED. Portfolio should demonstrate breadth across at least three of: graphic design, social media, motion or video, illustration, data visualization, brand identity work.

Why You'll Love the Creative Team We always fight for the user. At the core of everything we do is the desire to elevate the customer experience and build something that makes readers' lives better. We take our work, and our craft, seriously.

  • Work in a collaborative environment where ideas are shared freely and individuals are empowered to affect change
  • Help build brand experiences that simplify the customer journey
  • Be part of a culture that recognizes and rewards effort
  • Surround yourself with some of Utah's best marketing minds and leave work every day having learned something new
  • Work inside a creative team actively investing in AI-augmented workflows, Figma-native design systems, and brand frameworks built for the post-AI era
The Impact You Will Make

As a Multimedia Designer, you will produce original, branded visual content across online editorial, landing pages, paid and organic social, email, and motion. Your work will span:

Visual content production

  • Create digital graphics that translate data and ideas into clear, scannable visual stories for readers
  • Design featured images, landing page graphics, social graphics, email graphics, icons, and illustrated brand elements using tools like Figma Design/Draw, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom, or equivalent
  • Build effective visual assets for paid social ad campaigns alongside our Paid Media team
  • Produce social media cutdowns and basic video edits using tools like Premiere, Adobe Express, Descript, or equivalent
  • Explore motion graphics using Figma Motion as the canvas matures (and as you mature with it)

AI-augmented creative production

  • Use AI-powered tools (Figma, Adobe, Descript, Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, or equivalents) to accelerate visual content production while maintaining brand integrity and creative point of view
  • Curate AI-generated outputs against brand standards: catch the homogenization, push for the non-obvious, refine until the work has a signature
  • Lead with intent: clarify what you want to make and why before you prompt; AI executes, you decide what's worth executing
  • Contribute to and follow our internal AI image and video production standards

Design system contribution

  • Populate and maintain graphic and video templates that allow non-designers to produce on-brand assets autonomously using tools like Adobe Express, Figma Buzz, Claude Design, or equivalent
  • Contribute to and maintain our Figma graphic libraries across brands, including primitives support, semantic variables, atomic graphics, icons, patterns, brushes, or equivalent
  • Help maintain icon sets and other brand asset systems as they scale

Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Creative Director, editorial leads, paid media team, product designers, marketing mangers, and digital PR specialists to ship on time and on brand
  • Participate in design critique, accept and give specific feedback, and grow through it
  • Manage your own schedule and prioritize across multiple concurrent projects
What You Bring

Non-negotiable: design fundamentals. You understand and apply the elements and principles of graphic and motion design at a level that does not require AI to be good. You know why a layout works, what makes typography read, and how color and hierarchy serve the story. AI accelerates your work. It does not produce it for you. You fight for the extra work past "good enough," because that little extra is where the work becomes yours.

Required

  • 3+ years digital graphic or motion design experience
  • Proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, Figma Draw
  • Working fluency in Figma Design (components, auto-layout, libraries, variables); curiosity about Figma Motion, Buzz, and the broader Figma ecosystem is essential
  • Comfortable using AI tools as part of your creative process
  • Basic video editing skills (cutdowns, social-first edits, light motion) using Adobe Express, Descript, or similar
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating breadth, craft, and a clear point of view
  • Ability to visualize data and complex ideas clearly and accurately
  • Strong creative instincts and the ability to channel brand personality through visual work
  • Clear written and verbal communication; able to give and receive constructive feedback
  • Ability to self-manage, hold quality bar across multiple projects, and meet team goals
  • Collaborative and flexible when working cross-functionally

Nice to have

  • Experience with motion graphics tools (After Effects, Figma Motion, or similar)
  • Experience working inside a documented design system with semantic variables, design tokens, or design.md style guides
  • Familiarity with Figma Make Kits, Weave, or Shaders
  • Experience producing visual content across multiple brands or sub-brands simultaneously
  • Familiarity with creative workflows in Airtable, Jira, or similar
  • Experience with content copyrights, credentials (C2PA), and AI provenance standards
