As of Sep 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for fifo roofing in the United States is $31.59, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $25.72 and $35.34 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is FIFO roofing?

FIFO roofing refers to roofing jobs that operate under a 'Fly-In Fly-Out' (FIFO) arrangement, typically in remote or regional locations. Workers are flown to the job site, where they stay for a set period (such as several weeks), and then fly home for a break. This approach is common in industries like mining or large-scale construction projects where roofing work is needed far from major cities. FIFO roofing roles often require flexibility, physical fitness, and the ability to work away from home for extended periods. These jobs can offer competitive pay but may also involve long hours and challenging conditions.

What are some unique challenges of working as a FIFO roofer, and how can professionals prepare for them?

FIFO (Fly-In-Fly-Out) roofing roles often require working in remote locations with extended shifts and time away from home, which can be challenging both physically and mentally. Roofers must adapt to varying weather conditions, strict safety protocols, and living in shared accommodations with teammates. To prepare, professionals should focus on building resilience, maintaining strong communication skills, and staying organized to manage both work tasks and personal well-being. Additionally, being proactive about safety training and understanding site-specific requirements will help ensure success in this demanding environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FIFO roofer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a FIFO Roofer, you need solid roofing installation and repair skills, familiarity with safety regulations, and often a relevant trade qualification or apprenticeship. Competence in using hand and power tools, fall protection equipment, and sometimes certifications like Working at Heights or White Card are typically required. Strong teamwork, adaptability to remote environments, and good communication are vital soft skills. These abilities ensure safe, efficient work in challenging, isolated conditions and contribute to project success.

How do I get into FIFO roofing work?

To get into FIFO roofing work, you typically need relevant roofing experience, physical fitness, and often a construction or roofing certification. Employers may require a valid driver's license and willingness to work on remote sites for extended periods, with some roles offering on-the-job training.
