What is a FIFO fly in fly out job?

FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) jobs are positions where employees travel from their home location to a remote work site, typically in mining, oil and gas, or construction industries. Workers are flown to the site for a set roster period (such as two weeks on, one week off), during which they live in provided accommodation near the work site. After their roster, they return home for their break before repeating the cycle. FIFO arrangements are common in regions where the work site is too far from urban centers for daily commuting.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a FIFO fly in fly out worker?

To thrive as a FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) worker, you generally need relevant trade qualifications or certifications, physical fitness, and experience in remote or resource industry environments. Familiarity with safety management systems, specialized machinery, and compliance with site-specific training such as MSHA or OSHA is typically required. Strong resilience, adaptability, and teamwork are essential soft skills for managing extended time away from home and collaborating with diverse crews. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring safety, productivity, and well-being in challenging, isolated work settings.

What are common challenges faced by FIFO fly in fly out workers, and how can they be managed?

FIFO workers often face challenges such as extended time away from family, adapting to shift work, and adjusting to remote work environments. Managing these challenges involves maintaining strong communication with loved ones, establishing healthy routines to cope with changing shifts, and utilizing on-site support services. Many companies also offer Employee Assistance Programs and recreation facilities to help workers balance their well-being while on site. Building a support network among colleagues can also make the transition to FIFO life smoother.
