What is a fifo engineer?

A FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) Engineer is a professional who works on a rotational basis, typically in remote locations such as mining sites, oil and gas projects, or infrastructure developments. They travel to the worksite for a set period (e.g., two weeks on, one week off) and then return home during their off time. FIFO Engineers are responsible for designing, maintaining, and optimizing engineering projects while adhering to strict safety and operational standards. This role often involves long hours, challenging environments, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. The FIFO schedule provides a structured work-life balance but requires adaptability and resilience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fifo engineer?

To thrive as a FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) Engineer, you require a relevant engineering degree, strong technical expertise in your discipline (such as mining, mechanical, or civil), and proven problem-solving abilities. Familiarity with industry standard software (e.g., AutoCAD, SAP) and certifications like safety inductions or site-specific tickets are typically expected. Exceptional communication, adaptability to remote work environments, and resilience in high-pressure situations are key soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure you can deliver quality engineering solutions while maintaining safety and efficiency on rotational work schedules in remote project locations.

What should I expect from the work schedule and lifestyle as a fifo engineer?

As a FIFO Engineer, you will work in a rotational roster, commonly spending several weeks on-site followed by a set period off-site, which can affect your work-life balance and personal routines. You will typically live in provided accommodations and may work longer shifts in remote locations, fostering close teamwork and reliance on your colleagues. While being away from home can be challenging, the role often comes with above-average compensation and unique opportunities to work on major projects. It's important to be prepared for the physical and mental demands, but many find the camaraderie and career advancement prospects rewarding.

How much do FIFO engineers make?

FIFO engineers typically earn between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of the project. They often work in remote or industrial environments and may require specialized certifications or safety training.

Job description

Director of Warehouse Operations

We are seeking a Director of Warehouse Operations for a large food manufacturing company with a highly automated distribution operation in the Atlanta area. This role will lead a 24/7 warehouse operation supporting the movement of finished food products from manufacturing through distribution, with a major focus on Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS), high-bay crane systems, WMS execution, inventory accuracy, food safety compliance, and outbound customer fulfillment.

This is not a traditional warehouse role. Candidates must have hands-on leadership experience in a high-volume food manufacturing or food distribution environment utilizing ASRS crane systems. The successful candidate will understand how to lead people, systems, automation, inventory, and product flow in a fast-paced, audit-ready food operation.

Responsibilities

Lead a 24/7 warehouse operation supporting a high-volume food manufacturing environment

Oversee exempt and non-exempt warehouse leadership teams across multiple shifts

Own operational performance of ASRS crane systems, automated storage solutions, WMS, ERP, and related warehouse technologies

Partner with Manufacturing, Transportation, Maintenance, Engineering, IT, Quality, Food Safety, and Supply Chain teams to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient product flow

Drive inventory accuracy, FIFO rotation, order fulfillment, dock-to-stock, order-to-ship, and outbound shipping performance

Improve ASRS uptime, throughput, system utilization, loading accuracy, and warehouse productivity

Lead labor planning, staffing, budget management, capital projects, and automation improvement initiatives

Maintain a safety-first, food-safety-focused, audit-ready warehouse culture

Ensure compliance with OSHA, FDA, GMP, SQF, food defense, and internal food safety requirements

Build and develop a high-performing warehouse leadership team focused on accountability, engagement, safety, and continuous improvement

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Engineering, Business, or related field

7+ years of progressive warehouse/distribution leadership experience

At least 2 years in a Director-level or senior warehouse leadership role

Required experience in food manufacturing or food distribution

Required hands-on leadership experience with Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS), specifically high-bay automated crane systems

Strong WMS, ERP, inventory control, FIFO, and warehouse automation experience

Experience leading large 24/7 multi-shift warehouse operations

Experience managing exempt and non-exempt warehouse teams

Strong understanding of food safety, GMP, FDA, SQF, OSHA, and audit-ready warehouse practices

Experience with labor planning, budgeting, forecasting, KPIs, throughput, inventory accuracy, shipping accuracy, and operational cost management

Experience partnering cross-functionally with manufacturing, maintenance, engineering, IT, transportation, quality, and supply chain
