Fieldpiece information

What is a Fieldpiece?

Fieldpiece is not a job title, but rather a brand known for producing professional tools and equipment for HVACR (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration) technicians. Fieldpiece tools help technicians diagnose, repair, and maintain HVACR systems efficiently. People working with Fieldpiece products are typically HVACR technicians who use these specialized instruments—such as multimeters, refrigerant scales, and leak detectors—to ensure systems are running safely and efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HVAC technician?

To thrive as an HVAC Technician, you need a solid understanding of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, often supported by technical training or certification such as EPA Section 608. Familiarity with diagnostic tools (like those made by Fieldpiece), multimeters, and HVAC control systems is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong customer service skills help technicians excel in varied work environments. These skills ensure accurate diagnostics, efficient repairs, and satisfied clients, which are essential for success in this role.

What are some common challenges faced by HVAC technicians working with Fieldpiece tools?

HVAC technicians using Fieldpiece tools often encounter challenges such as adapting to new technology, ensuring accurate diagnostics, and managing equipment calibration. Field conditions can vary greatly, so technicians must be comfortable troubleshooting in diverse environments and sometimes under tight time constraints. Additionally, keeping up with the latest product updates and best practices for tool maintenance is essential for delivering efficient and reliable service.

What is the difference between Fieldpiece vs HVAC Technician?

Fieldpiece refers to a brand of testing tools used by HVAC professionals, including HVAC technicians. An HVAC Technician is a skilled worker who installs, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. While Fieldpiece tools are essential for HVAC technicians, the roles are distinct: one is a brand of equipment, the other is a job title. Understanding this difference helps clarify job requirements and tool usage in the HVAC industry.

Job description

Ensure Our Next Generation of HVACR Products Perform When It Matters Most

Fieldpiece is a privately held, global leader in professional HVACR tools and test instruments. We're known for developing innovative products that technicians rely on every day - and for investing in our people, our technology, and our future. Named one of the Best Places to Work in Southern California for four consecutive years, we're looking for talented people who want to make an impact while growing their careers.

Why This Role?

At Fieldpiece, quality isn't something we inspect after a product is built - it's engineered into every design from the very beginning.

As our Senior Design Quality Engineer – Hydraulics & Pressure Systems, you'll partner with Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, and Product Engineering teams to ensure our pumps, pressure systems, and other electro-mechanical products meet the highest standards for performance, reliability, and durability before they ever reach the customer.

This is a highly collaborative role where you'll influence design decisions, develop verification strategies, validate prototypes, investigate failures, and help engineering teams build products right the first time. If you enjoy solving complex technical problems and making products better before they launch, you'll thrive here.

This position is in our Orange, CA office with an exciting move to Tustin, CA in 2028.  This role follows a hybrid work schedule, with employees typically working onsite three days per week. Additional in-office days may be required from time to time for onboarding, training, team meetings, project collaboration, or other business needs.

What You'll Do

  • Partner with engineering teams throughout the development of new pumps, pressure systems, and other electro-mechanical products.
  • Develop and execute verification and validation plans to ensure products meet performance, reliability, safety, and customer requirements.
  • Design and perform testing, evaluate prototypes, and identify opportunities to improve product quality before launch.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical quality guidance throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Investigate product failures, perform root cause analysis, and drive corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and global suppliers to support successful product launches and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure products meet applicable quality, safety, and regulatory requirements.

What Makes This Opportunity Different

  • Influence the production of electro-mechanical tools and instruments before they reach customers - not after problems occur.
  • Partner directly with engineering teams throughout the entire product development lifecycle.
  • Join an innovative company where quality is viewed as a competitive advantage, not just a checkpoint.
  • Solve challenging technical problems involving pumps, pressure systems, fluid handling, and product reliability.

In Your First Year, You'll Likely

  • Become a trusted quality partner to engineering teams during new product development.
  • Lead verification efforts for several high-impact product launches that deliver exceptional performance and customer confidence.
  • Strengthen product reliability through effective testing and early risk identification.
  • Help improve quality processes that accelerate development while maintaining high standards.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or another STEM-related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in Design Quality, Design Assurance, Verification & Validation (V&V), or New Product Development Quality for complex electro-mechanical products.
  • Experience developing and executing verification and validation plans, test protocols, and product validation activities.
  • Experience with pumps, fluid handling systems, pressure systems, compressors, valves, and other electro-mechanical products.
  • Strong understanding of design controls, risk management, root cause analysis, and quality engineering principles.
  • Experience with DFMEA, Design for Reliability (DfR), or statistical quality tools.
  • Experience working with global manufacturing partners, ODMs, or OEMs.
  • Experience partnering with cross-functional engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Bonus Points If You Have

  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 or other product quality and safety standards.
  • Experience in HVACR, industrial equipment, instrumentation, or other complex electro-mechanical products.

Why You'll Enjoy Working at Fieldpiece

  • As a privately held company, we invest for the long term—in our people, our products, and our future. That means we can focus on innovation, continuous improvement, and building lasting careers rather than chasing short-term results.
  • Work alongside talented, collaborative teammates who are passionate about innovation and solving real world problems.
  • Make a meaningful impact in a company where your ideas are heard, your expertise is valued, and your contributions help shape the future of our products and business.

Benefits & Perks

We believe great work starts with supporting our employees. That's why we offer a competitive total rewards package designed to promote your health, financial well-being, work-life balance, and professional growth.

  • Competitive base salary with annual bonus opportunity
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) with company match and immediate vesting
  • Generous paid time off and paid holidays
  • Hire to Retire philosophy - Individual Development Plans for everyone and a commitment to support career development
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), Health Savings Accounts (HSA), and Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Music program – music rooms in all US offices with onsite guitar, piano, and voice lessons in California (classes can be streamed for other offices)
  • Recognition programs, launch parties and team building events to share successes

At Fieldpiece, we're building more than innovative products - we're building careers. If you're looking for a place where your work matters and your contributions are recognized, we'd love to meet you.
