What does a field project manager do?

A Field Project Manager is responsible for overseeing and coordinating projects at job sites, ensuring that work is completed safely, on time, and within budget. They manage teams, allocate resources, and serve as the primary point of contact between the office and field operations. Their duties often include scheduling, quality control, safety compliance, and problem-solving to address any issues that arise during the project. Effective communication and leadership skills are essential for this role.

How does a field project manager typically balance on-site responsibilities with administrative tasks?

Field Project Managers often split their time between the project site and the office, managing both hands-on coordination and essential paperwork. On-site, they oversee project progress, address unforeseen challenges, and coordinate with crews and subcontractors. Off-site or in the office, they handle budgeting, scheduling, reporting, and client communications. Efficient time management and clear delegation are key to ensuring both aspects are handled effectively, supporting project goals and team cohesion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a field project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Field Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, industry-specific knowledge, and typically a bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Procore), budgeting tools, and safety compliance certifications like OSHA are often required. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication are critical soft skills that set top candidates apart. These skills and qualifications are vital for coordinating teams, meeting project deadlines, and ensuring successful project delivery in dynamic field environments.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage multiple millwork projects from award through completion

  • Review architectural drawings, specifications, and project requirements, and coordinate with various stakeholders

  • Coordinate materials, fabrication, delivery, installation, and resolve field issues to ensure project completion

Job description

Project Manager โ€“ Architectural Millwork

We are looking for someone who has 4+ years of experience in custom carpentry/millwork.

Established Millwork Company | Full-Time

We are an established and growing architectural millwork company looking for an experienced Project Manager to join our team.

This position is ideal for someone with a strong understanding of custom cabinetry, architectural millwork, and construction who can manage projects while also understanding the technical side of how cabinets and millwork are designed, engineered, fabricated, and installed.

The Project Manager will serve as a key connection between our clients, architects, designers, general contractors, estimators, drafters, shop, and installation teams. You will help take projects from the initial drawings through engineering, fabrication, delivery, and installation, making sure the details are correct and the project continues moving forward.

We are looking for someone who is hands-on, technically minded, organized, and capable of solving problems. You should be able to look at a set of drawings, understand the design intent, recognize potential issues, and work with the team to determine the best way to build and install the finished product.

Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple millwork projects from award through completion
  • Review architectural drawings, elevations, details, specifications, and project requirements
  • Coordinate with architects, designers, general contractors, clients, vendors, and internal teams
  • Review and help develop cabinet and millwork designs for fabrication
  • Work with our drafting and shop teams to ensure millwork is properly engineered and buildable
  • Review shop drawings and ensure dimensions, materials, finishes, hardware, and construction details are accurate
  • Identify potential conflicts or constructability issues before fabrication
  • Help determine practical solutions for unique or complicated cabinet and millwork conditions
  • Coordinate field dimensions and site conditions with the project requirements
  • Communicate project details and changes clearly to the shop and installation teams
  • Coordinate materials, hardware, fabrication, delivery, and installation
  • Work directly with installers to resolve field issues and ensure proper installation
  • Coordinate millwork with other trades, including electrical, plumbing, appliances, equipment, and architectural elements
  • Track project schedules, deadlines, changes, and important project milestones
  • Assist with RFIs, submittals, change orders, and project documentation
  • Communicate project updates and issues to clients and contractors
  • Review project changes and determine how they affect fabrication, cost, and installation
  • Troubleshoot problems throughout the project and develop solutions quickly
  • Maintain organized project files and documentation
  • Help ensure projects are completed on time, accurately, and to our quality standards

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in architectural millwork, cabinetry, construction, project management, drafting, or a related field
  • Strong understanding of cabinet and millwork construction
  • Ability to read and understand architectural plans, elevations, sections, and details
  • Ability to visualize how a design translates into a physical finished product
  • Understanding of materials, hardware, cabinet construction, and installation methods
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Comfortable communicating with contractors, architects, designers, shop personnel, and installers
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects
  • Proficient with computers and willing to learn company-specific software and systems

The Right Candidate

The ideal candidate understands that successful millwork projects require more than simply managing a schedule.

You should be able to bridge the gap between the drawing, the shop, and the jobsite.

We are looking for someone who takes ownership, follows through, communicates well, and catches problems before they take place.

What We Offer

  • Full-time position with an established and growing millwork company
  • Competitive compensation based on experience
  • Variety of commercial and residential millwork projects
  • Hands-on involvement throughout the entire project lifecycle
  • Opportunity to work closely with experienced fabrication and installation teams
  • Long-term growth opportunity
  • A key role within an established company where your work directly impacts the success of each project

To Apply

Please submit your resume along with a brief description of your experience in millwork, cabinetry, construction, project management, drafting, or cabinet engineering.
