Job Description


The Town of Essex is eager to welcome a new Planning Technician to our Community Development team. This is a full time position with excellent benefits. Work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, hours may vary depending upon needs of the municipality. 


The Planning Technician is an entry-level position that serves as the first point of contact for most visitors and callers to the Community Development office. This position also plays a critical role by ensuring the orderly flow and tracking of items related to the Town’s development review and permitting process. Additionally, the Planning Technician is responsible for many tasks related to the Department’s transition to digital record-keeping and permitting. The Planning Technician also supports the Development Review Board by preparing minor development application reports.


The following is a list of the more common duties and responsibilities attributable to this position. This list is not all-inclusive and may be amended from time to time as circumstances may dictate.

  • Greets visitors and determines the nature of their requests.
  • Assists residents and property owners with completion of applications.
  • Assists in processing permit and zoning compliance applications.
  • Updates website content, calendars, agendas, and minutes.
  • Attends evening Development Review Board (DRB) meetings as necessary.
  • Provides staff support and attends the evening meetings of the Housing Commission (estimate 1 meeting per month).


A bachelor's degree is preferred in a relevant discipline with some coursework in land use, architecture, historic preservation, or conservation plus some relevant experience in a related field or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

The Town’s goals include hiring the candidate who is best able to meet the objectives of the position.     The pay range for this position is $23.00 to $27.00 per hour. The starting salary for this role varies depending on the level of experience of the chosen candidate.
