How much do field painter jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 11, 2026, the average hourly pay for field painter in the United States is $25.19, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.43 and $29.33 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are field painters?

Field painters are professionals who apply paint, coatings, or finishes to surfaces and structures located outside of a traditional shop or factory environment. They typically work on-site at construction projects, industrial facilities, bridges, pipelines, or other outdoor locations. Field painters are responsible for preparing surfaces, selecting appropriate materials, and ensuring that coatings are applied safely and effectively, often under varying weather conditions. Their work helps protect structures from corrosion, wear, and environmental damage while maintaining appearance and compliance with regulations.

What are some common challenges Field Painters face when working on outdoor projects, and how can they prepare for them?

Field Painters working on outdoor projects frequently encounter challenges such as varying weather conditions, surface preparation on uneven or aged substrates, and strict safety protocols. Adapting to changes in temperature or humidity is essential, as these can affect paint application and drying times. To prepare, Field Painters should familiarize themselves with different types of paint and coatings suitable for various environments, invest in appropriate protective gear, and stay updated on safety standards. Collaboration with site supervisors and other trades is also key to ensuring project timelines and quality standards are met.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A field painter can potentially earn $10,000 a month through high-volume projects, efficient work, and premium residential or commercial contracts. Success in this role depends on experience, skill, and the ability to secure large or frequent jobs, often without requiring formal higher education but possibly needing certifications or licenses for certain equipment or safety standards.

What jobs will no longer exist in 2030?

Field painter jobs are less likely to disappear entirely by 2030 but may decline due to automation and advances in painting technology, such as robotic paint applicators. However, skilled manual painters will still be needed for specialized or detailed work that requires human judgment and craftsmanship.

How much do field painters get paid?

Field painters typically earn between $12 and $20 per hour, depending on experience, location, and whether they are employed full-time or part-time. Skilled painters with certifications or specialized tools may earn higher wages, and the job often involves working outdoors with physical demands.

What is the difference between Field Painter vs Commercial Painter?

AspectField PainterCommercial Painter
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma, on-the-job training, sometimes certifications in painting or safetyHigh school diploma, certifications in safety, and sometimes specialized training in commercial painting
Work EnvironmentOutdoor and outdoor-like settings, construction sites, sports fields, industrial areasIndoor commercial spaces, offices, retail stores, industrial facilities
Employer & Industry UsageConstruction companies, sports organizations, industrial firmsProperty management companies, commercial construction firms, renovation contractors

Field Painters primarily work outdoors on large-scale projects like sports fields and industrial sites, requiring outdoor safety skills. Commercial Painters focus on indoor commercial spaces, often working within buildings. Both roles require safety certifications and have overlapping skills, but they differ mainly in work environment and project type.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Field Painter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Field Painter, you typically need experience with surface preparation, paint application techniques, color matching, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with spray guns, rollers, scaffolding, and safety equipment, along with certifications such as OSHA, are commonly expected. Attention to detail, reliability, and strong communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure high-quality, safe, and efficient work on diverse job sites, meeting client and industry standards.

What jobs pay 2000 a day?

Field painters typically do not earn $2,000 a day; their pay depends on experience, location, and project size. High-paying jobs that can reach this level include specialized roles such as commercial or industrial painters working on large-scale projects, or contractors with extensive experience and a strong client base. These roles often require advanced skills, certifications, and the ability to manage complex projects efficiently.
