They often travel to client locations or project sites to ensure that machinery, infrastructure, or technology is functioning correctly and efficiently. Their work may involve testing equipment, diagnosing problems, performing repairs, and providing technical support to clients or team members. Field engineers often serve as a bridge between the engineering team and the client, ensuring that all technical requirements are met. The role typically requires strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and the ability to work independently in diverse environments.

What does a field engineer do?

As a field engineer, your main responsibilities include the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of equipment, machinery, or facilities in a number of industries. Field engineers can work in the construction, telecommunication, energy, oil and gas, and manufacturing industries, to name just a few. Your specific duties depend on the field in which you work, but you typically must travel to a work site to inspect it before they install a machine or piece of equipment and travel whenever equipment is experiencing technical issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a field engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Field Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, troubleshooting, and hands-on technical expertise, usually supported by an engineering degree or relevant certification. To address these, strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication with both on-site teams and off-site support are essential. Building a solid understanding of equipment and developing a proactive approach to potential issues can also help Field Engineers succeed. Collaboration with other engineering teams and regular training in the latest technologies are key to overcoming these challenges.

  • Prepare record drawings for as-built infrastructure, utilizing AutoCAD
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve field issues or design discrepancies in collaboration with the design team
  • Conduct quality control inspections to ensure compliance with specifications and standards
  • Assist with cost tracking, scheduling updates, and change order documentation

What we're looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering field
  • Strong understanding of construction methods and materials
  • Ability to read and interpret engineered drawings, plans, and specifications
  • Experience or ability and willingness to learn AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and/or similar tools
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying site conditions and travel to project locations as needed
  • Previous experience in construction, consulting, or field engineering is a plus
  • EIT certification or working toward licensure is preferred
  • Experience with public-sector infrastructure projects (DOT, municipal, water/wastewater, etc.) is preferred
  • A Valid Driver's License and clean driving history is required
