How much do field draftsman jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 12, 2026, the average hourly pay for field draftsman in the United States is $26.86, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $21.15 and $30.53 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are Field Draftsmen?

Field Draftsmen are professionals who create technical drawings and plans based on on-site measurements and observations. They often work in industries like construction, engineering, and architecture, visiting project locations to gather accurate data and translate it into detailed blueprints or schematics. Their work ensures that the designs reflect actual site conditions, helping projects run smoothly and according to specifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Field Draftsman, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Field Draftsman, you need a solid understanding of technical drawing, surveying principles, and drafting standards, often supported by an associate degree or certification in drafting or a related field. Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) software, GPS equipment, and field measurement tools is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help ensure accuracy and effective collaboration with engineers and field teams. These skills are crucial for producing precise drawings and documentation that support successful project execution and minimize costly errors.

What is the highest paying drafting job?

Senior or specialized drafting roles, such as architectural or civil engineering drafters with advanced skills and certifications, tend to have the highest salaries in the drafting field. Positions involving complex projects, leadership responsibilities, or proficiency with advanced CAD software often command higher pay.

Will AI replace Draftsman?

AI technology can automate certain drafting tasks, but Field Draftsmen play a crucial role in interpreting designs, making adjustments, and ensuring accuracy that AI alone cannot fully replicate. Skilled draftsmen are still needed to review, modify, and collaborate on projects, especially in complex or customized work. Therefore, AI is more likely to augment rather than replace the role of a draftsman entirely.

What is the difference between Field Draftsman vs Civil Draftsman?

AspectField DraftsmanCivil Draftsman
CredentialsDiploma or certificate in drafting, surveying, or related fieldDiploma or certificate in civil engineering drafting or related field
Work EnvironmentOn-site, outdoors, surveying, and field measurementsOffice-based, creating civil engineering drawings and plans
Industry UsageConstruction sites, surveying companies, infrastructure projectsEngineering firms, construction companies, architectural offices
Search & Comparison IntentYesYes

While both roles involve drafting skills, a Field Draftsman primarily works outdoors on-site, focusing on surveying and field measurements. In contrast, a Civil Draftsman works mainly in offices creating detailed civil engineering drawings. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find the right position based on work environment and responsibilities.

What are some common challenges Field Draftsmen face when working on-site, and how can they be addressed?

Field Draftsmen often encounter challenges such as adapting to changing site conditions, ensuring accurate measurements in dynamic environments, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders like engineers and construction crews. These challenges can be addressed by maintaining clear communication, using reliable digital measuring tools, and staying organized with detailed documentation. Flexibility and proactive problem-solving are key traits that help Field Draftsmen manage unexpected issues and deliver high-quality drawings that reflect current site realities.

How much is the salary of a Draftsman?

The salary of a field draftsman typically ranges from $40,000 to $70,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level draftsmen may earn less, while experienced professionals with specialized skills can earn higher wages, often supplemented with benefits and overtime pay.

Are drafters still in demand?

Field draftsmen, or drafters, continue to be in demand in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and engineering, especially those skilled in CAD software and technical drawing. Employment opportunities depend on industry growth and project needs, with some regions experiencing steady demand for drafting professionals.
