Field Data Scanner information

What is a field data scanner?

A Field Data Scanner is responsible for collecting and recording data in various field environments using handheld scanning devices or mobile technology. They typically work in industries like logistics, retail, or utilities, scanning barcodes, QR codes, or other identifiers to track inventory, assets, or operational data. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential, as the collected data is used for reporting, analysis, and decision-making. This role often requires travel to different locations and may involve working in diverse weather conditions or physical environments.

What does a field data scanner do?

As a Field Data Scanner, your workday usually involves traveling to designated locations, using specialized equipment to scan barcodes, inventory assets, or capture geospatial data, and accurately inputting this information into digital systems. You may work independently or as part of a small field team, coordinating with supervisors and other departments to meet project goals and schedules. While the job often requires outdoor work in varying weather conditions and some physical activity, it offers a dynamic environment with changing sites and tasks. Over time, experienced Field Data Scanners can move into supervisory or data management roles, providing opportunities for career advancement.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a field data scanner?

To thrive as a Field Data Scanner, you need keen attention to detail, accuracy in data collection, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with handheld scanning devices, GPS units, and data entry software is typically required, and training or certification in relevant scanning technology can be advantageous. Strong organizational skills, reliability, and effective communication help individuals excel in this role. These abilities are vital for ensuring that collected field data is precise, timely, and usable for project decision-making.

Job description

Overview
Are you looking for more than repetitive layout work or being siloed into a survey-only function? As a Field Engineer - Layout & Surveying at Danis, you'll be embedded with the project team and play a critical role in how our buildings come together-from early site control through final execution.
This role sits at the intersection of field operations, layout technology, and project coordination. You'll lead layout and scanning efforts across structural, architectural, and major building systems, identify design conflicts early, and help drive RFIs that keep projects moving and rework low.
You'll work side-by-side with Superintendents, Project Engineers, and VDC-blending hands-on field work with technical problem-solving. If you enjoy variety, ownership, and seeing the direct impact of your work in the field, this is a role where you can truly make your mark.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do:
Field Layout & Project Execution
  • Lead layout for site control, elevations, building grids, deep foundations, footings, walls, columns, decks, embeds, sleeves, boxouts, floor elevations, and anchor bolts across civil and structural scopes.
  • Perform topographic surveys, 3D scanning, QA/QC checks, and other critical measurements to support construction accuracy.
  • Establish and manage project control, ensuring layout is accurate, timely, and coordinated with site schedules.
  • Provide subcontractors with verified control points in accordance with contract requirements.

Technology, Data & Coordination
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date data files, spreadsheets, as-builts, layout logs, and drawing revisions to support informed field decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with VDC and survey teams on startup control, scanning, and cross-project initiatives.
  • Review drawings, bulletins, and RFIs to ensure layout reflects the latest construction documents and intent.
  • Identify constructability issues early and support the RFI process to drive resolution before work is impacted.

Team Leadership & Collaboration
  • Train and support Project Engineers, co-ops, foremen, and superintendents in layout processes and the effective use of robotic total stations and emerging technology.
  • Oversee daily layout activities and coordinate closely with field leadership to align priorities with evolving site needs.
  • Support survey operations on additional Danis projects as needed based on workload and company priorities.

Equipment & Quality
  • Perform routine equipment checks and maintenance, including pegging auto levels and coordinating servicing schedules.
  • Promote consistency, precision, and quality across all layout and surveying activities.

Qualifications
What You Bring
  • Working knowledge of builder's levels, total stations, 3D scanners, AutoCAD, and Autodesk Point Layout.
  • Experience with robotic total stations (RTS); familiarity with Trimble or equivalent systems required.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications and stay current with revisions.
  • Strong understanding of construction operations, sequencing, and how layout impacts project success.
  • Clear communicator who collaborates well across field and office teams.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple requests in a fast-paced jobsite environment.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Surveying, or a related field or NSPS/CST certification.
  • 3-5 years of experience in building construction and site layout/surveying (GC or large-scale project experience preferred).
  • Proven experience managing day-to-day layout activities on active construction sites.

Working Conditions
This role includes a mix of field and office responsibilities, with a significant presence on active construction sites.
  • Local travel required; extended hours may be needed based on project demands.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Physical requirements include standing, walking, bending, climbing ladders or scaffolding, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Why You'll Love Working Here
  • Your work directly impacts how our buildings are constructed-from the ground up.
  • You'll collaborate with experienced, down-to-earth teams who care about doing things right.
  • You'll use modern layout technology and continue to grow your technical and leadership skills.
  • You'll be trusted with real responsibility and seen as a key contributor on the project team.

Why Choose Danis
  • Competitive total compensation
  • Annual merit increases and performance bonuses
  • Profit sharing
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Short- and long-term disability and life insurance
  • 401(k) with retirement planning support
  • Certification reimbursement and continuing education
  • Danis University with 45+ training programs
  • Clear career progression paths
  • Generous PTO and vacation policies
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA)
