Job description

Description

About the role
We are looking for a hands-on lead application engineer to lead technical ownership, stability, and integration of our Field and Clinical Applications, including our Point-of-Sale (Encompass) and Electronic Health Record (EEHR) ecosystems. The lead application engineer is expected to deliver true engineering-led work owing to building POCs for new technologies and platforms, end-to-end system stability, deep technical triage, complex integrations, observability, and vendor engineering partnership.

You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams — including engineering, infrastructure, database, network, data warehouse, product, clinical specialists, and external vendors (e.g., Eyefinity) to ensure that our applications and integrations meet both technical and user requirements with high availability and performance.

Key responsibilities include leading a team of engineers and application specialists, driving incident response and root cause analysis, managing complex integrations across the MyEyeDr. ecosystem, and assessing the downstream impact of vendor releases. As a leader, you will leverage your technical expertise to provide guidance on complex engineering challenges, champion observability and reliability, and contribute to architectural and strategic planning.

This position reports to Engineering Manager, Corp & Field Applications & Product Engineering, this is a hybrid remote role, offering a flexible work arrangement out of our Vienna, VA office, with an in-office requirement of two days per week.

The hiring range for this position is $167,000 to $180,000 annually, exclusive of benefits or bonuses (discretionary and non-discretionary), based on experience and proximity to the Vienna Home Office.

You Will

  • Own end-to-end system stability for Encompass (POS), EEHR, and related field and clinical applications, acting as the primary technical authority during incidents.
  • Lead deep technical triage across database, application, infrastructure, network, and monitoring layers before escalating issues to vendors such as Eyefinity.
  • Validate vendor-provided scripts and fixes (including complex SQL scripts) for correctness, production safety, and data integrity prior to execution.
  • Drive incident management and root cause analysis for multi-clinic outages, engaging the right internal teams and coordinating with vendor engineering resources for rapid resolution.
  • Assess vendor release impact across downstream MyEyeDr. systems including SSRS reporting, MyEyeDr-developed extensions, and business-critical integrations; coordinate proactive validation with internal teams.
  • Own and evolve the integration architecture between Encompass, EEHR, MyEyeDr-developed applications, and third-party platforms — including APIs, Windows services, message queues, service buses, and EDI-based integrations.
  • Establish and mature observability across field and clinical systems (metrics, logs, traces, synthetic monitoring, alerting) using tools such as Dynatrace, APM, and log aggregation platforms to reduce mean-time-to-detect and mean-time-to-resolve.
  • Partner closely with Eyefinity and other vendor engineering teams using a shared technical language to accelerate issue resolution and influence product direction.
  • Technically mentor and lead a team of engineers, application specialists, and QA members; establish delivery cadence and ensure high-quality delivery within budget.
  • Championing the needs of business and clinical stakeholders throughout the engineering lifecycle, ensuring that what is delivered achieves the business value and ROI objectives of each initiative.
  • Anticipate upstream and downstream impacts of changes and proactively identify risks; outline options, recommend solutions, and escalate as needed.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives across the entire lifecycle of engineering delivery — from design through deployment and post-deployment support — including knowledge transfer and training.
  • Work closely with PMO and Enterprise Architecture to align engineering execution with architectural standards and portfolio priorities, contribute to Architecture Review Board documentation and ongoing updates.
  • Lead onshore and offshore teams to ensure delivery with quality, predictability, and within budget.
  • Exercise sound judgment and decision making to maintain high levels of visibility and transparency to leadership, and to remove blockers and issues.

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Management Information Systems, or a related technical field required.
  • 10+ years of experience in building and operating enterprise-grade Practice Management Systems (PMS) or SaaS products.
  • Demonstrated experience leading 2–3 engineering / scrum teams, including vendor relationships and offshore teams.
  • Observability experience hands-on experience implementing and operating observability platforms (e.g., Dynatrace, New Relic, AppDynamics, Splunk, Datadog, Grafana/Prometheus) including metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, SLOs/SLIs, alerting, and synthetic monitoring.
  • Integration experience: hands-on experience designing, building, and supporting complex enterprise integrations — including REST/SOAP APIs, Windows services, message queues / service buses, event-driven architectures, EDI (e.g., X12), and vendor-to-internal system integrations.
  • In-depth application development experience with C#/.NET, RESTful APIs, Azure Cloud platform/services, and SQL.
  • 1-2 years of experience in AI technologies, AI assisted SDLC or agentic SDLC

  • Experience in Healthcare.
  • Experience in incident management, production support, and root cause analysis for mission-critical systems.
  • Working knowledge of Confluence, Azure DevOps, Jira, CI/CD, APM, Test Automation, and PPM tools.

Highly Preferred

  • Hands-on experience using MS SQL Server
  • Experience with Insurance and Revenue Cycle Management.
  • Experience in Optical / Vision Care industry: familiarity with optical retail operations, optometry workflows, lens/frame catalogs, or platforms such as Eyefinity Encompass, AcuityLogic, or Eyefinity EHR.
  • Master’s degree in computer science, Management Information Systems, or related field.
  • Experience partnering with third-party vendors on shared platforms and jointly owned production systems.
  • Experience with cloud-native architectures, containerization, and platform reliability engineering (SRE)
