They often work alongside sales to provide technical expertise during customer meetings, helping to identify solutions tailored to specific client needs. FAEs also relay customer feedback and technical requirements back to the product development team, ensuring that products evolve in line with market demands. This collaborative approach helps create more effective solutions and strengthens customer relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Field Applications Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Field Applications Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or electronic engineering, combined with problem-solving skills and relevant experience in technical sales or support. Familiarity with CAD tools, circuit simulation software, and common industry standards is often required, and certifications like Certified Field Application Engineer (CFAE) can be advantageous. Excellent communication, customer service orientation, and the ability to explain complex concepts clearly are vital soft skills. These competencies ensure you can bridge technical and commercial needs, deliver effective solutions, and build strong client relationships.

Job description

ASSA ABLOY is seeking a Field Sales Applications Engineer to serve as the technical bridge between our innovative access control solutions and the integrators, consultants, and end users who deploy them. This role blends pre-sales engineering, field support, and customer engagement to drive adoption of Control iD and broader electronic access control technologies across key markets.
Key Responsibilities
  • Partner with regional sales teams to provide technical expertise throughout the sales cycle, from discovery to deployment.
  • Deliver product demonstrations, system design consultations, and technical presentations to integrators, consultants, and end users.
  • Support specification development by working with A&E firms and security consultants to position ASSA ABLOY solutions in project designs.
  • Assist with system architecture design, including readers, controllers, credentials, and software platforms (cloud and on-prem).
  • Provide hands-on support for product evaluations, pilot deployments, and field troubleshooting.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on Control iD and electronic access control solutions, including biometric, mobile, and IP-based systems.
  • Gather field intelligence on competitive offerings, customer needs, and emerging trends to inform product and marketing strategies.
  • Conduct technical training sessions for integrators and channel partners to improve installation quality and product adoption.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product management, support, and engineering to resolve issues and enhance offerings.

Required Qualifications
  • 3-7+ years of experience in a sales engineering, applications engineering, or technical support role within electronic access control or physical security.
  • Strong understanding of access control system components, including credentials (RFID, mobile, biometrics), readers, controllers, and management software.
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, PoE, VLANs) and system integration principles.
  • Experience working with systems integrators, security consultants, and enterprise end users.
  • Ability to translate technical capabilities into customer value and business outcomes.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills, both technical and customer-facing.
  • Willingness to travel within the region (approximately 30-50%).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Control iD or similar biometric/IP-based access control platforms.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and compliance (UL 294, OSDP, SIA protocols).
  • Experience supporting cloud-based access control solutions and mobile credential ecosystems.
  • Background in low-voltage system design or installation.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or Portuguese) is a plus, especially for diverse partner engagement.

Key Competencies
  • Customer-centric problem solving
  • Technical credibility with field teams and consultants
  • Sales enablement and influence without authority
  • Adaptability in fast-moving, solution-oriented environments
  • Strong collaboration across sales, product, and support teams
