What is a fiduciary?

A fiduciary is a person or entity entrusted with the legal and ethical responsibility to act in the best interests of another party. This role is common in financial services, estate planning, and law, where fiduciaries manage assets, provide investment advice, or oversee trusts. Fiduciaries are legally required to prioritize their clients' interests above their own, avoiding conflicts of interest and ensuring transparency. Their duties typically include financial decision-making, asset management, and acting with loyalty and care.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a fiduciary?

To succeed as a Fiduciary, you need a solid understanding of financial management, regulatory compliance, and ethical standards, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications such as CFP or CPA. Familiarity with portfolio management software, trust accounting systems, and compliance monitoring tools is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and trustworthy communication help fiduciaries build lasting client relationships. These competencies are critical for responsibly managing assets and maintaining clients' best interests in a highly regulated environment.

What types of clients or organizations do fiduciaries typically serve, and how does that influence daily responsibilities?

Fiduciaries may serve a wide range of clients including individuals, families, trusts, pension funds, or nonprofit organizations, and the specific client base often shapes the fiduciary's daily duties. For example, working with individual clients can involve detailed financial planning, estate management, and regular client meetings, while managing institutional portfolios might focus more on compliance oversight and large-scale investment strategies. The need to tailor services based on each client's objectives means fiduciaries must balance multiple tasks and maintain a high level of organization. This dynamic environment offers variety and challenge, helping professionals develop expertise in client service, asset management, and regulatory navigation.

Do fiduciaries make a lot of money?

Fiduciaries, such as financial advisors or trustees, can earn varying incomes depending on their experience, client base, and the services they provide. Compensation often includes fees, commissions, or a combination, and those with specialized certifications or extensive client portfolios tend to earn higher salaries. Overall, earnings can range from moderate to high, but they are generally aligned with industry standards for financial professionals.

Job description

About Hook Law

Hook Law is a leading trusts, estates, and fiduciary law firm with a multi-office presence and a rapidly growing fiduciary and estate administration practice. We regularly serve as fiduciaries and counsel fiduciaries in complex, high-stakes matters involving trusts, estates, business interests, and multi-generational families.
As part of a deliberate leadership transition and long-term growth strategy, we are building a best-in-class fiduciary platform—one that combines technical excellence with institutional rigor, thoughtful leadership, and a modern operating model.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Trust Officer to play a foundational leadership role in the firm’s largest and most strategically important practice area.
This role goes well beyond traditional trust administration. The Trust Officer will help institutionalize and professionalize our existing fiduciary practice, partner with firm leadership to define and execute a long-term growth strategy, and take a leading role in expanding the practice across Virginia, North Carolina, and additional states over time.

Key Responsibilities – Fiduciary Administration & Oversight

- Serve as Trust Officer for matters where the firm acts as trustee, executor, agent, or in other fiduciary capacities.
- Oversee and administer complex trust and estate matters.
- Ensure fiduciary duties are carried out with the highest standards of integrity and care.
- Collaborate closely with attorneys, paralegals, CPAs, and outside advisors.

Key Responsibilities – Practice Institutionalization & Excellence

- Design and implement repeatable systems, processes, and standards.
- Develop workflows, templates, and controls to support scale.
- Identify and mitigate fiduciary, operational, and reputational risk.
- Improve consistency, transparency, and client experience.

Key Responsibilities – Strategy & Growth

- Partner with firm leadership to define the strategic vision for the fiduciary practice.
- Identify opportunities for geographic and service-line expansion.
- Support business development and referral relationships.
- Help position the firm as a trusted fiduciary solution for complex clients.

Key Responsibilities – Leadership & Collaboration

- Lead, mentor, and develop fiduciary and administrative team members.
- Collaborate with executive leadership, Operations, and Finance.
- Contribute to firm-wide initiatives supporting scalability and excellence.

Who We’re Looking For

An entrepreneurial fiduciary leader with significant experience in trust or estate administration who is eager to build, lead, and scale a practice. The ideal candidate demonstrates high integrity, strong judgment, hands-on leadership, and a collaborative mindset.

Why Join Hook Law

- Leadership opportunity in a core practice area.
- Platform for multi-state growth.
- Collaborative, modern professional-services culture.
- Meaningful work with long-term impact.

Location & Work Environment

This role will work closely with firm leadership across Virginia and North Carolina. A hybrid model is available, with in-person presence expected as needed.
