Position Description


Job Title: School Librarian

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Job Status: Part Time

Reporting Functions: Reports to Principal

Job Function: Responsible for managing the school library and has a passion for educating students K-8. This includes but is not limited to, teaching the library classes, maintaining an inventory of books and electronic equipment, and cataloging all materials.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily operation of the school Library; provide library services to all students, faculty, and administration.
  • Maintain accessibility of all materials for students and staff; catalog all materials and maintain all correspondence.
  • Creates lesson plans and teaches a Library for grades K-8th that includes how to distinguish among various types of books (fiction, non-fiction, etc.) and how to use the databases for finding books and other materials within the Library, library protocols, and schedule class periods.
  • Maintain an inventory of all books, magazines, learning materials, and electronic equipment including audiovisuals; perform regular housekeeping to ensure cleanliness (dust removal, corrosion, etc.)
  • Review the collection annually to determine needs, replacements, etc.; order, process, and catalog any new materials.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop writing projects related to grade-level curriculums.
  • Maintain a positive relationship with students, parents, faculty, and administration; encourage the use of the library for both information and recreation; encourage younger students' interests in reading.
  • Any other duties assigned by the Principal.

Educational Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a related field
  • Certification as a School Librarian
  • At least 3 years experience as a school librarian.

Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of library services and best practices.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to create engaging content for various grade levels.
  • Ability to educate and assist students effectively.
  • Excellent classroom management skills required.
  • Use of a computer and other office equipment (copiers, faxes, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel and basic database programs.

PRIOR TO INTERVIEW: Clear records of Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check (PATCH), Pennsylvania Child Abuse History, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal Background Fingerprint Check as required under Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Act 153 of 2014 (No less than 1 year old.) As well as attendance at the online Protecting God's Children class and Mandated Reporter Training.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand and bend; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone. Use of hands to operate standard office equipment; with occasional reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds is also required.

Working Conditions: Normal elementary school environment; part time, 2 days a week. Hours will mirror the operation of the school; 7:45 AM to 3:15 PM. May be required to occasionally work outside of normal work hours to attend meetings and events.
