What is a Fiber Design job?

A Fiber Design job involves planning and designing fiber optic networks to ensure efficient and reliable communication infrastructure. This includes route planning, selecting appropriate fiber types, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. Fiber designers work with engineering teams, GIS tools, and field surveys to create accurate network layouts. Their role is crucial in expanding broadband connectivity, optimizing network performance, and supporting telecommunications growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Fiber Design position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fiber Design professional, you need a solid understanding of fiber optic network planning, civil engineering basics, and GIS mapping, typically supported by relevant technical training or a degree in a related field. Experience with design tools such as AutoCAD, GIS software, and familiarity with industry standards like FTTx and permitting processes is often required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for coordinating with construction teams and stakeholders. These combined skills ensure accurate, efficient fiber network layouts that meet technical and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced in a Fiber Design role, and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in Fiber Design often encounter challenges such as handling complex route planning, accommodating unexpected field conditions, and ensuring regulatory compliance across multiple jurisdictions. These challenges are typically addressed by leveraging advanced design software, collaborating closely with field survey teams, and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of municipal codes and industry standards. Effective communication with project managers, construction crews, and clients helps proactively resolve issues and keep projects on track. Developing problem-solving skills and adaptability are essential for navigating the dynamic nature of fiber network projects.

Job description

We are hiring a Senior Network Engineer for a high-impact, senior-level role focused on end-to-end fiber architecture design within large-scale industrial environments. This is not a traditional network support role โ€” it is a design-heavy, architecture-focused position requiring deep expertise in fiber optics, industrial telecom, and Oil & Gas EPC projects.

This opportunity is ideal for professionals who have led fiber infrastructure design across complex environments, worked on FEED and Detailed Engineering phases, and can operate as a technical lead interfacing with clients, vendors, and cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design entire fiber optic infrastructure (end-to-end) for industrial environments

  • Develop fiber network architecture including:

    • Layouts, routing plans, splicing diagrams, termination details

  • Design redundant backbone architectures (ring/mesh/star) with failover mechanisms

  • Define and implement:

    • IP addressing schemes

    • VLAN segmentation

    • QoS policies

    • Switching, routing, and firewall configurations

  • Conduct and validate:

    • Fiber link budgets

    • Cutover strategies

    • Network migration plans

    • OTDR testing requirements

  • Define cable specifications (single-mode/multi-mode, armored, fire-rated) per industry standards

  • Create detailed engineering deliverables:

    • Block diagrams

    • System architectures

    • Layouts

    • Termination schedules (using AutoCAD)

  • Design and validate telecom systems for hazardous Oil & Gas environments (LAN/WAN, hotline systems)

  • Lead SCADA automation network design and industrial networking solutions

  • Interface with:

    • Electrical, instrumentation, process, automation, and IT teams

  • Develop technical specifications, datasheets, and material requisitions

  • Conduct vendor document reviews and ensure technical compliance

Required Skills:
  • 10+ years of Telecommunications Engineering experience

  • Minimum 5+ years in a Senior or Lead role within Oil & Gas EPC projects

  • Strong experience in:

    • Fiber optics architecture & design (core requirement)

    • Industrial telecom environments

    • Large-scale infrastructure deployments

  • AutoCAD proficiency (mandatory)

  • Experience with:

    • Redundant network design (RSTP, PRP, HSR, MPLS)

    • Fiber backbone design and failover strategies

  • Strong knowledge of:

    • IP networking, VLANs, and industrial cybersecurity

  • Hands-on experience with:

    • Cisco, Hirschmann, Moxa, Siemens networking equipment

Technical Skills & Competencies:
  • Fiber Architecture & Redundancy (Ring, A/B, Geo-Redundant)

  • Fiber Cutover & Network Migration

  • Fiber Infrastructure (FJC, FJB, ODF, Panels, Racks)

  • FEED & EPC Engineering Deliverables

  • SCADA & Automation:

    • RTUs, PLCs, Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850

  • Industrial Networking:

    • TCP/IP, Switching, Routing, Firewalls

  • Experience with:

    • Cisco IOS/IOS-XE, Juniper, Siemens

  • Expert knowledge of Fiber Optic Cable Plant Design (OSP/ISP)

Preferred Background:
  • Strong preference for candidates from:
