Director of the Business Competition Team and Summer Camps
Department: Robert W. Plaster School of Business
Location: Columbia, MO, 65216
Type: Staff, Full-Time
Pay: $40,000-47,000 per year

Job Description:
This position reports directly to the Dean of the Robert W. Plaster School of Business (RWPSOB) and leads operations of the Business Competition Team and RWPSOB events. As the Director of the Business Competition Team (BCT), the person will lead and execute strategic planning and operations for the BCT that will include development of a mission, vision and strategic plan while also developing and nurturing a strong team culture built on strong relationships with students, their parents, team alumni, and the campus community. The BCT Director will also be responsible for leading the marketing and recruiting efforts for the BCT targeting students at high schools and community colleges within a 120-mile radius of Columbia College. The BCT Director will prepare those students to compete successfully at the state, national, and international levels, establishing annual competitive-performance goals, and collaborating with Career Services to connect BCT students with employer-development opportunities and support their career readiness and postgraduation placement. As the Director of RWPSOB Events, this person will lead the planning and execution of the annual Voices of Business Summer Camp, the Black Business Expo, RWPSOB New Student Orientation activities, and annual awards ceremonies, while also providing support and collaboration with RWPSOB Faculty for additional annual events including the Fish Tank Pitch Competition.
Approximate Allocation of Responsibilities:
  • Business Competition Team leadership: 30%. Strategic direction, culture, coordination of coaches and student leaders, competitive preparation, and program assessment.
  • Recruitment and retention: 30%. Prospective-student outreach, collaboration with Admissions, recruitment events, campus visits, scholarships, and roster management.
  • Competition administration: 10%. Chapter advising, registration, travel, competition scheduling, budgets, and compliance.
  • School of Business events: 20%. Leadership of specifically assigned annual events and project support for additional events approved by the Dean.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Collaborate with BCT Assistant Coaches BCT Student Executive Board, and additional students on the BCT roster on the creation, and continued movement of, a mission, vision, annual goals, and overall strategic plan for the BCT.
  • Create and sustain a strong team culture that ensures retention and growth of BCT students.
  • Develop and execute a Coaching Philosophy for the BCT in collaboration with Assistant Coaches that leads to empowerment, personal growth and success of BCT students.
  • Manage the full schedule of competitions including Collegiate DECA, Collegiate FBLA, and other competitions that span across all areas of discipline within the RWPSOB.
  • Serve as the Advisor for the Collegiate FBLA and DECA Chapters at Columbia College including registering members, coordinating entries into Collegiate DECA and FBLA events, and managing the travel and accommodations during those competitive events.
  • Develop and execute a plan for recruitment at high schools and community colleges within a 120-mile radius of Columbia College.
  • Coordinate the work of the BCT Assistant Coaches and lead and manage the BCT Student Executive Board and student assistants to accomplish the following:
  • Scheduling and planning Team practices, mock competitions, and team-bonding events.
  • Developing relationships with DECA, FBLA, CCLA, and FFA advisors at high schools and community colleges within a 120-mile radius of Columbia College to seek out opportunities to serve as a guest instructor or guest speaker at chapter meetings, for the purpose of finding students to recruit for the BCT roster.
  • Identifying potential BCT members through state and international High School and Collegiate DECA, FBLA, and FFA competition results research, and visiting targeted BCT recruits at their respective high schools.
  • Presenting and managing a booth at events related to high school FBLA and DECA, the Missouri Business Educators Association, Marketing Cooperative Education Association, and other similar organizations in surrounding states.
  • Maintaining contact with all recruits in that territory with the goal of getting them on campus for a visit and signing a Letter of Intent to be part of the BCT.
  • Develop and manage annual operating budgets for the BCT and assigned RWPSOB events.
  • Collaborate with the Dean to administer BCT scholarships and manage scholarship allocations.
  • Establish and maintain student eligibility and participation expectations and practice, travel, conduct, and participation policies.
  • Assess recruitment, retention, competitive performance, program outcomes, and event outcomes and use the results to inform annual planning.
  • Maintain accurate program and event records and develop continuity procedures for recurring responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with Career Services to connect BCT students with career-readiness and employer-development opportunities.
Duties of the Director of RWPSOB Events include, but are not limited to:
  • Lead the planning and execution of the annual Voices of Business Summer Camp that includes strong collaborations with applicable campus departments, scheduling, securing speakers, procuring external sponsorships, hiring of camp facilitators and counselors, promotion of the camp to families and students within at least a 120-mile radius, and managing all communication to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serve as the Co-Chair of the Black Business Expo in partnership with the James amp; Annelle Whitt Entrepreneurial Development Foundation.
  • Assist the Director of the Steve amp; Barbara Fishman Center for Entrepreneurship on the planning and execution of the annual Fish Tank Pitch Competition
  • Lead the planning and execution of RWPSOB New Student Orientation activities and annual RWPSOB awards ceremonies.
  • Collaborate with RWPSOB Faculty and Staff on additional events that can further develop RWPSOB students, provide support to the Business community in Boone County, or provide positive awareness of Columbia College to potential students and parents. These may include additional camps, recruitment events, alumni events, community or employer events, and other faculty-sponsored activities. Additional events will be assigned based on available capacity and the Dean’s priorities.
Qualifications:
  • Requirements
    • Bachelor’s degree earned from an accredited college or university.
    • Experience planning and executing successful events.
    • Proven success in leadership roles for organizations.
    • Experience in recruiting or sales.
    • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
    • Experience with budget management.
    • Experience with project management.
    • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends and travel overnight and out of state as required.
    • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet institutional driving requirements.
  • Preferences:
    • Master’s degree earned from an accredited college or university
    • Two years of combined experience planning and executing successful events.
    • Experience working directly with high school or college students.
    • Experience supervising employees, volunteers, or student leaders.
    • Leadership experience in a high school or college setting that specifically entails building and nurturing a positive team culture, developing team members to be successful in their roles.
    • Recruiting or sales experience for a college or university for either Admissions or Advancement.
    • Two years of experience serving as an Advisor for a High School or Collegiate Chapter of DECA, FBLA, or CCLA is preferred, but not required.
    • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
