What does a fence contractor do?

A fence contractor specializes in the installation, repair, and maintenance of fences for residential, commercial, or industrial properties. Their work includes assessing property boundaries, recommending suitable fencing materials and styles, providing cost estimates, and ensuring the fence meets local codes and regulations. Fence contractors can install a variety of fence types such as wood, vinyl, chain link, or metal, and may also offer services like gate installation and fence removal.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fence contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fence Contractor, you need expertise in construction techniques, measuring and cutting materials, and an understanding of various fencing types, often supported by relevant experience or vocational training. Familiarity with power tools, hand tools, and sometimes construction management software is typical, and some states may require a contractor license or certification. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication with clients and team members set top contractors apart. These skills ensure fences are installed safely, efficiently, and to client specifications, which is crucial for reputation and business growth.

What are some common challenges faced by fence contractors on the job site?

Fence contractors often encounter challenges such as working with uneven terrain, unpredictable weather conditions, and navigating underground utilities when installing fences. Coordination with clients and other contractors is crucial to ensure that the project meets specifications and local regulations. Additionally, managing material deliveries and ensuring safety standards are upheld can require strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

The main difference between a Fence Contractor and a Fence Installer is that the Fence Contractor manages the entire fencing project, including permits and supervision, often holding relevant licenses. The Fence Installer focuses on the physical installation of fences, working on-site to complete the work based on plans. Both roles are essential, but contractors typically have broader responsibilities and credentials.

How much money can you make building fences?

Fence contractors typically earn between $15 and $35 per hour, with annual salaries ranging from $30,000 to $70,000 depending on experience, location, and project complexity. Skilled contractors who own their businesses or specialize in high-end fencing can earn higher incomes. Factors such as certifications, tools, and customer demand influence earning potential.

Where do fence contractors make the most money?

Fence contractors tend to earn higher wages in regions with higher living costs and greater demand for construction services, such as urban or affluent suburban areas. Job description

Hi, we're Cascade Fence and Deck. We build backyards people actually want to live in, and we do it with a crew that works hard, laughs a lot, and doesn’t make excuses. We’re not your typical contractor. We care about the work, the customer, and each other, and we’re building something bigger than just another construction company.

Where could you fit in?

We hire for a range of roles depending on your experience and what kind of work you actually enjoy:

  • CSR: You are the welcoming face of our company. You handle all the incoming calls, and schedule appointments for our estimators super efficiently. If you love to talk - this is a great option for you.
  • Estimator (Design Consultant): Works directly with homeowners to design their backyard projects. You’ll walk properties, understand what the customer wants, help shape the design, and turn that into a clear, buildable design and quote it for them.
  • Project Manager: Oversees projects from start to finish. Timeline, communication, and overall execution and customer experience of the project.
  • Project Engineer: Works behind the scenes to support the build, creating material lists, running structural calculations, handling permitting, and making sure projects are set up correctly before work begins.
  • Shop Assistant: Keeps things running behind the scenes, pre-fab, organizing job packs, and making sure crews have what they need to stay efficient.
  • Craftsman (Field Crew): Out in the field building custom fences, decks, patio covers, and saunas with a team. Hands‑on, physical work, and a big part of what we do day‑to‑day. Building our customers dream projects.
  • Foreman (Crew Lead): Leads a crew on-site. Responsible for execution, quality, and keeping jobs moving in a fun and enjoyable way.
  • Superintendent: Keeps an eye on multiple projects and crews, making sure everything is running at a high level across the board.
  • Admin: This could be a range of things around the office and shop from helping in accounting, or helping the shop do material entries.
Folks who do well here:
  • Shows up on time. Every time.
  • Takes ownership instead of making excuses.
  • Works hard without needing to be chased.
  • Can handle sarcasm and give it right back.
  • Wants to improve at what they do.
The cherry on top?
  • Industry leading pay
  • Health/Dental/Vision insurance for you AND your whole family.
  • 401k opportunity
  • PTO and we’re actually stoked when you can take time off and enjoy yourself

Don’t see a perfect fit? Apply anyway.

Tell us:
  • Which role fits you best
  • Which location (Vancouver or Tumwater)
  • What kind of work you actually want to be doing

What position are you most interested in? (Even if it's not listed as an active application ad, please specify here)
