Job Summary

The Volunteer Specialist shares coordination of the day-to-day volunteer program in eastern South Dakota by recruiting, scheduling, onboarding, and supporting volunteers for distribution center projects, mobile food distributions, and special events. This position collaborates across departments to meet volunteer needs, maintains volunteer records, and fosters a positive volunteer experience that supports Feeding South Dakota's mission. This is a part-time position.


Job Responsibilities

Volunteer Recruitment & Scheduling

  • Serves as point of contact for region-specific inquiries from existing and potential volunteers in a timely manner, including scheduling volunteers via email, phone, and website for shifts.
  • Assists in recruiting volunteers to ensure opportunities at the region-specific distribution center, mobile distributions, and special events are adequately filled.
  • Works with Feeding South Dakota staff to identify volunteer projects and activities.
  • Coordinates, maintains, and communicates volunteer schedules with operations staff and provides them with the resources needed for successful volunteer experience.

Volunteer Experience

  • Welcomes, trains, and supervises individual volunteers and groups.
  • Maintain volunteer waiting areas to ensure they are clean, organized, welcoming, fully stocked with necessary supplies, and that the volunteer bulletin board is current and well maintained.
  • Executes volunteer recognition efforts.

Program Administration

  • Completes necessary paperwork and/or computer input for volunteers (i.e., community service, court-ordered, etc.).
  • Assist in documenting volunteer-specific SOPs.

Community Engagement & Events

  • Executes responsibilities relating to special events (i.e. Volunteer Appreciation Week, Letter Carrier Drive, Bring Your Child to Serve Day, Thanksgiving Meal Distribution), working closely with the Development and Operations teams.
  • Speaks to Feeding South Dakota's mission and need for support with volunteers.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Works closely with the Community Engagement Manager and Development team to identify and cultivate volunteers into donors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: Medium Work: Medium work involves lifting approximately 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds. If someone can do heavy work, it is also determined that they can also do sedentary and light work.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills and a comfortability using technology.
  • Must possess excellent communication, public speaking, and presentation skills.
  • Personnel management and training responsibilities are desired
  • Some weekend and evening work may be required.
