Job description

Position Title: WELDING ENGINEER

Position Summary:

Weld Engineers develop welding techniques, processes and applications of welding equipment to produce quality products in compliance with customer requirements in a โ€œhands-onโ€ environment. They also review and evaluate customer requirements in conjunction with MTM's quality system.


Reports to: Welding Engineer Team Leader


Personnel: Not Applicable


Accountabilities:

Provide an interface between the fabrication shop personnel and Customer Focused Teams for welding needs, changes and ideas. Estimate time standards for quotations and assist in devising manufacturing plans for new fabrication work orders. Be involved in work order reviews. Work with CFT to review shop needs for upcoming work orders. Coordinate all Procedure Qualification Records and Welding Procedure Specifications: Write new PQRโ€™s and WPSโ€™s as necessary. Revise current PQRโ€™s and WPSโ€™s as necessary. Work with Welding Technician to improve content of WPSโ€™s while staying within code limits. Maintain PQRโ€™s and WPSโ€™s

Authorities:

Maintain and revise welding documentation per Storage and Maintenance of Welding Documentation procedure. Initiation and approval of welding process development per Qualifications of Welders and WPSs and Welding Process Development. Initiate and approve welder performance qualification per Qualifications of Welders and WPSs and Welder Performance Qualifications. Assign WPSs and welding consumable requirements to work orders.


Duties:

  • Design various fixtures for new jobs while working with welding teams to minimize production downtime.
  • Support the weld shop regarding technical problems including but not limited to techniques and procedures.
  • Perform CWI Inspection and/or random visual checks of work orders in process in conjunction with applicable specifications.
  • Supervise process of Welder Performance Qualifications.
  • Work with outside vendors/reps for shop needs.
  • Provide customer interface if necessary.
  • Provide technical training to MTM personnel as necessary.
  • Additional tasks as assigned by the Weld Engineer Team Leader.

Job Qualification Requirements:

Educational Experience โ€“ BS in Engineering/Engineering Technology with Welding emphasis or equivalent through work experience.


Experience โ€“ At least four years progressive work experience in the welding field. Knowledge of welding processes, advanced fabricating techniques, quality processes, NDT, materials, heat treatment, etc.


Physical Demands โ€“ The employee is required to:

  • stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor
  • exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or
  • exert 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and /or
  • exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.


Certification Required โ€“ AWS or CWI certifications preferred.


Visual Acuity โ€“ Near acuity and accommodation are required for CWI Inspection and/or random visual checks reading machine dial gauges, blueprints, and precision measuring instruments used in the inspection of parts and machinery.


Hearing Ability โ€“ N/A


Working Conditions โ€“ The employee may be subject to:

  • high noise levels from operating machines
  • physical hazards from moving equipment and production components
  • breathing fumes, dust and mist
  • skin exposure to oils and cutting fluids.


The employee may be required to follow other job-related instructions and to perform other job-related duties as requested, subject to all applicable state and federal laws.
