What is a federal project manager?

A Federal Project Manager is a professional responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing government projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with federal regulations. They coordinate resources, manage project teams, and communicate with stakeholders across various government agencies. Federal Project Managers are also tasked with risk management, contract administration, and ensuring that the project's objectives align with agency goals. Their work is critical in delivering public services and infrastructure efficiently and effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a federal project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Federal Project Manager, you need expertise in project management principles, budgeting, compliance, and a strong understanding of federal regulations and contracting, often supported by a bachelor's degree and PMP or FAC-P/PM certification. Colliers Project Leaders is a team committed to projects that make a difference in communities and for the people who live there.

We deliver capital project solutions that strengthen the built environment, partnering with our clients to bring critical infrastructure and complex building projects to life.

We’ve led over 20,000+ projects that:

  • Make cities more livable
  • Enhance workplaces
  • Create spaces people want to return to
  • Improve patient care
  • Deliver clean drinking water
  • Build a sustainable future

And so much more.

This is where you come in. We’re looking for people to join our team who are passionate about creating more sustainable, resilient and inclusive communities.

If this kind of work resonates with you, you’re in the right place

Your role

Join our team as a Senior Project Manager in our British Columbia Business Unit.

In this role, you will lead a diverse range of major capital building and infrastructure projects across the province, working alongside a talented team of industry experts.

You will leverage your project management expertise to oversee projects of varying sizes and complexity. These include large-scale developments for higher education institutions—such as student housing and academic buildings—civic facilities including libraries, police and fire stations, recreational complexes, and multi-stakeholder initiatives for provincial and federal entities as well as Crown corporations.

This is a strategic leadership role offering the opportunity to drive the growth of our business in a way that aligns with both your personal values and the diverse needs of the communities we serve. We are looking for a driven, self-motivated, and collaborative Senior Project Manager who is passionate about leading projects and fostering strong, enduring relationships with clients, senior leaders, and key decision-makers.

  • Inspire and lead multiple high-performing project teams, driving excellence in project delivery and cultivating a collaborative, empowered team culture. Shape and influence multidisciplinary teams to exceed client expectations.
  • Provide strategic project leadership, guiding clients through every phase—from initial setup to execution and into operations, ensuring success at every step.
  • Act as a trusted partner, applying your expertise in design, construction, and operations to help our institutional clients from higher education institutions, municipalities, and provincial/federal ministries, to navigate the complexities of large capital projects, delivering results that align with their vision.
  • Be the key connector with your leadership and communication skills, bringing together diverse teams to deliver outstanding, community-focused projects that leave a lasting legacy.
  • Lead from the front in project and site meetings, solving complex challenges, managing multiple stakeholders, and ensuring every project stays on track and delivers results.
  • Build lasting relationships, becoming a trusted advisor and relationship manager for key clients, nurturing partnerships that drive mutual success.
  • Shape the future of our business, contributing to the strategic growth of our business unit and helping us expand our impact in the industry.

  • Proven track record with 8+ years of project management experience, ideally within large-scale building and infrastructure projects, demonstrating your ability to lead complex, high-impact initiatives.
  • Deep expertise in design, construction, and operations, with a strong understanding of how to navigate the challenges of institutional projects across sectors like education, civic, and infrastructure.
  • Strong financial acumen, with experience managing project budgets, forecasts, and ensuring cost-effective delivery.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or an equivalent designation is highly valued, demonstrating your commitment to professional excellence.
  • Expert in client and stakeholder management, with the ability to influence key decision-makers and resolve a variety of challenges, whether commercial, technical, or interpersonal, while maintaining focus on project objectives and ensuring smooth coordination.
  • Educational background in Engineering, Architecture, Urban Planning, Business Administration, or a related field showcasing your strong foundation in project management, design, and construction principles.
  • Proven success in business development, with experience closing new deals, winning high-profile projects, and confidently leading client interviews.

Approximate Base Salary Range for Role:  $97,920 -$134,640 CAD.

Base Salary pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location and reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire base salaries for the position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Annual bonus opportunities are in addition to base salary.

Don’t have every single qualification? We know that some people are less likely to apply for a job unless they are a perfect match. At Colliers Project Leaders, we’re not looking for “perfect matches.” We’re looking to welcome people to our diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace.  So, if you’re excited about this role but don’t have every single qualification, we encourage you to apply anyway. What you can expect:

  • An opportunity to truly impact our communities
  • A flexible work environment
  • A comprehensive onboarding experience
  • Significant professional development, training, and a mentorship program
  • A paid volunteer day
  • An environment where people feel welcome, heard and included, regardless of their differences
  • And much more!

Join our team of difference-makers and help shape the growth of dynamic communities.
