Renewable Project Manager information

What does a renewable project manager do?

A Renewable Project Manager oversees the planning, execution, and completion of renewable energy projects such as solar, wind, or hydroelectric installations. Their responsibilities include coordinating project teams, managing budgets and timelines, ensuring regulatory compliance, and communicating with stakeholders. They work closely with engineers, contractors, and local authorities to ensure that projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and sustainably. Successful Renewable Project Managers combine technical knowledge with strong leadership and organizational skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a renewable project manager?

To thrive as a Renewable Project Manager, you need expertise in project management, renewable energy systems, budgeting, and a relevant degree such as engineering or environmental science. Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project or Primavera), regulatory compliance tools, and certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2 is highly valued. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and stakeholder communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies are crucial to successfully deliver projects on time and within budget while navigating the technical, regulatory, and collaborative challenges unique to the renewable energy sector.

What are some common challenges faced by renewable project managers during project execution?

Renewable Project Managers often encounter challenges such as securing necessary permits, managing tight timelines, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders including contractors, regulatory agencies, and local communities. Unpredictable factors like weather conditions and supply chain delays can also impact project schedules. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong communication, proactive risk management, and adaptability to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.

Job description

We are at the beginning of a global energy transformation of a scale not seen in generations. A future low-cost, low-carbon electric grid, serving a world that electrifies everything, is within our reach.

The last remaining gap is breaking the link between electricity supply and demand. The lowest-cost, most sustainable sources of energy today come from intermittent renewable generation; but our homes, businesses and industries need electricity at the flick of a switch.

That gap can be closed by energy storage: Devices that store electricity when it is plentiful, then provide power back to the grid when it is needed. Solutions, including ones using lithium-ion batteries, are being deployed in massive numbers to start filling this gap. But so far, none of those solutions have proven the ability to deliver power any time, anywhere, over decades of service: The level of reliability we've come to expect, and that the future grid will need.

This is the biggest challenge in energy today. Invinity is at the forefront of finding a solution. And we need you to help us deliver it.

Developed, manufactured and delivered by our teams in Canada and the UK, Invinity's vanadium flow batteries (or "VFBs") can be installed anywhere and consistently deliver electricity as needed over a service life exceeding 30 years. Moreover, Invinity's VFBs are highly recyclable, don't rely on rare or conflict minerals, and won't catch fire.

Invinity is a global VFB leader, with over 190 megawatt-hours of its batteries operational or in construction  for over 82 projects across 15 countries - more than any other emerging energy storage provider. We've deployed the largest flow battery systems in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the UK. Along the way we've earned financial support from the UK Infrastructure Bank, the U.S. Department of Energy, and some of the world's leading institutional investors.

The Project Manager is responsible for the successful delivery of utility-scale and commercial energy storage projects from contract award through commissioning and customer acceptance. Acting as the primary point of contact for customers throughout project execution, the Project Manager leads cross-functional teams to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contractual requirements.

This role requires strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, combined with the ability to navigate complex technical, commercial, and operational challenges in a rapidly evolving energy industry.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Delivery & Customer Management

  • Serve as the primary customer interface throughout the project lifecycle, building trusted relationships and ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction.

  • Lead project execution from initiation to close.

  • Ensure contractual obligations, customer requirements, and project objectives are clearly understood and achieved.

  • Manage customer expectations while maintaining alignment with company objectives and contractual commitments.

Scope, Cost & Schedule Management

  • Develop and manage detailed project schedules in collaboration with external and internal stakeholders and monitor project milestones and critical paths.

  • Monitor project financial performance, identify variances, and implement corrective actions when necessary.

  • Support revenue forecasting, change order management, and project reporting processes.

  • Identify, assess and escalate project risks throughout the execution lifecycle.

  • Manage scope changes, commercial impacts, and project contingencies while maintaining alignment with project objectives.

  • Understand project contracts, commercial terms, and key obligations.

  • Manage claims, and contractual correspondence in collaboration with commercial and legal teams.

Reporting & Governance

  • Prepare and deliver accurate project status reports highlighting schedule progress, budget performance, risks, opportunities, and key decisions.

  • Present project updates to senior leadership, customers, and project steering teams.

  • Ensure compliance with internal project management processes, governance requirements, and reporting standards.

Stakeholder Coordination

  • Facilitate effective communication across stakeholders via regular project meetings and documentation - tracking decisions, risks, action items, and commitments to completion.

Technical Leadership

  • Develop a working knowledge of grid-scale and commercial energy storage systems, balance-of-plant infrastructure, electrical systems, and site delivery requirements.

  • Collaborate closely with subject matter experts to resolve technical challenges and support customer discussions.

Continuous Improvement

  • Capture lessons learned and contribute to the ongoing enhancement of project delivery processes, tools, and best practices.

  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, safety, and operational excellence.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2+ years of project management experience delivering complex technical, industrial, infrastructure, energy, or construction projects with multiple stakeholders

  • Strong financial acumen with experience managing project budgets, forecasts, and reporting.

  • Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, and customer relationship management skills.

  • Proven ability to identify risks, solve problems, and drive projects to successful completion.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, Project Management, or a related discipline.

  • Experience delivering energy or large-scale industrial projects ideally in the energy storage industry

  • Familiarity with EPC, design-build, or technology deployment environments.

  • PMP, PRINCE2, or equivalent project management certification.
