What is a federal architect?

Federal Architects are licensed professionals who design, plan, and oversee the construction and renovation of buildings and facilities owned or operated by the federal government. Their work ensures that government structures meet safety, accessibility, sustainability, and historical preservation standards. Federal Architects often collaborate with engineers, contractors, and government officials to deliver projects that serve public needs, such as courthouses, military facilities, and national monuments. They must comply with federal regulations and guidelines throughout the design and construction process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a federal architect?

To thrive as a Federal Architect, you need a professional degree in architecture, state licensure, and strong knowledge of building codes, design standards, and project management. Experience with CAD software, BIM tools like Revit, and familiarity with federal design and procurement processes are typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and attention to detail are essential soft skills for coordinating with stakeholders and ensuring compliance. These skills and qualifications are vital to deliver secure, sustainable, and regulatory-compliant facilities for government agencies.

How does a federal architect typically collaborate with other stakeholders during large-scale government projects?

Federal Architects frequently work in multidisciplinary teams, coordinating closely with engineers, project managers, contractors, and government officials to ensure that projects meet strict regulatory standards and client requirements. They often facilitate meetings, review design documents, and address compliance issues throughout the planning and construction phases. Effective communication and collaboration skills are essential, as Federal Architects must balance technical constraints with stakeholder expectations while adhering to federal guidelines. This collaborative environment fosters a deeper understanding of large-scale project management and allows architects to broaden their expertise in public sector design.

This position will ensure that the project design meets scope of work and consultant coordination. This position will contribute to QAQC, stamp drawings and will report to a division level senior project manager. This position involves providing guidance, training, and supervision to less experienced design professionals in overcoming technical challenges and effectively managing their time and resources to deliver projects on time and within budget. The work is fast-paced and requires daily interaction with client representatives, code officials and external project partners. Travel will be required for site analysis, documentation and assessment of existing conditions, and construction administration as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the project manager in meeting with clients, analyzing the client's goals, and conceiving and developing solutions to those   goals within the community and regulatory parameters.
  • Initiate and create schematic designs and plans with responsibility for the preparation of drawings.
  • Coordinate workload through design development and construction document phases to complete documents on schedule.
  • Coordinate with the engineering disciplines and third-party equipment vendors, reviewing construction documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines.
  • Write/edit owner provided UFGS specifications.
  • Assist the project manager in planning and facilitating project meetings, setting agendas, and issuing meeting minutes.
  • Ensure code and accessibility compliance utilizing several competing and often conflicting building, life safety, health, and    accessibility codes.
  • Coordinates addendum, ASI, RFIs, and RFP Modifications and incorporating agreed upon changes into the project documents.
  • Execute construction administration utilizing owner provided web-based workspace.
  • Provide supervision and guidance to others assigned to facilitate the delivery of a project.

Examples of job responsibilities are not intended to be all inclusive. TESSERE reserves the right to assign additional responsibilities as needed.
