Job description

Summary
Performs and may oversee cleaning, set-up, maintenance, and security of classrooms, offices, restrooms, halls, stairs, and public areas in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)-owned buildings; performs routine duties in the movement of supplies, furniture, and equipment.
Qualifications
Required
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to completion of the eighth grade.
  • Some experience in public building custodial work.
  • Must successfully complete the FCPS Custodial Certification Course prior to or within one (1) year of appointment.
  • May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis.
  • Knowledge of custodial methods, equipment, procedures, and cleaning materials.
  • Ability to understand written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to learn the appropriate use of cleaning products.
  • Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.

Major Duties/Essential Functions
  1. Performs repetitive, heavy, manual work requiring efficient performance of simple building cleaning and maintenance duties in FCPS-owned buildings and may be responsible for the proper performance of custodial work performed during an assigned shift.
  2. May work independently in a small building or assist the building supervisor in a large building.
  3. Determines scheduled activities for specific days and times and ensures that reserved meeting/training rooms are appropriately set up and equipped for specific meetings/training activities.
  4. Unlocks and locks facility entrance and exit doors as needed.
  5. Mops wet and dry floors.
  6. Strips wax from floors, rewaxes, and operates buffing machine.
  7. Washes windows, fixtures, floors, and walls.
  8. Dusts furniture, lockers, cabinets, walls, window sills, radiators, and other furnishings.
  9. Dusts and washes venetian blinds.
  10. Empties trash and recycling receptacles.
  11. Checks all door locks and window latches in securing the building after cleaning.
  12. Raises and lowers the flag.
  13. Makes minor repairs to buildings, building equipment, and furniture.
  14. Delivers equipment, packages, and messages.
  15. Replaces light bulbs as required.
  16. Transports and empties large trash and recycling containers into outdoor units.
  17. Moves and transports furniture, equipment, boxed textbooks, and other supplies, manually or with mechanical assistance.
  18. Observes and reports needs for maintenance services and/or supplies.
  19. Maintains outside of the building by removing snow and ice, mowing the lawn, maintaining shrubbery, picking up paper and debris, and removing and emptying containers of standing water.
  20. Performs related duties as required or assigned.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements
This job requires the strength, agility, dexterity, and visual acuity to perform all tasks. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must adhere to all site safety regulations and may be required to regularly stand, sit, walk, bend, climb ladders, and/or kneel. There may be exposure to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, heavy equipment, moving machinery, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises. This job requires lifting up to 25 lbs., periodically lifting/moving up to 50 lbs., and occasional lifting/moving up to 100 lbs. alone or with assistance.
