Job description

Make a splash with the City Center YMCA! We're looking for dependable, safety-minded Lifeguards to help keep our pools safe while creating a welcoming experience for members and guests.

Not certified yet? No problem! We offer lifeguard training and certification to help you get started. Join the Y and build valuable skills while making a difference in your community.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Lifeguard at the YMCA creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining the safety of all aquatic facility users in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area while remaining on deck at all times, never leaving the pool unattended, and responds to any emergency that occurs
  2. Remain rescue ready while on the pool desk, including proper attire
  3. Follows proper protocol for transitioning with other lifeguards for reporting on duty and off duty as per scheduled shifts.
  4. Enforces all pool rules in a consistent and friendly manner, and remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others
  5. Organizes equipment and keeps pool area neat
  6. Informs members about lap patterns and areas of activity while responding to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner
  7. Keep a friendly and warm atmosphere for all members and guests, but remember the primary responsibility and continue to supervise all areas
  8. Follow the proper opening and closing procedures
  9. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA (i.e. chemical readings)
  10. Attends monthly staff meetings and trainings

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age of 15
  • Certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard
  • Obtain a state police clearance, a child abuse clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance
  • Obtain Mandated Reporter Clearance

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility
  • May regularly work in an outside environment and exposed to the elements
  • May have exposure to pool chemicals
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility
  • Employee must be able to communicate effectively by speaking and listening in a loud environment
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
