Fault Analysis information

What is the difference between Fault Analysis vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectFault AnalysisElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in electrical engineering or related field, with specialized training in fault detectionRequires a degree in electrical engineering, often with licensure or certification
Work EnvironmentPrimarily in power plants, substations, or industrial facilities focusing on system reliabilityDesign, develop, and test electrical systems across various industries
Industry UsageUsed in power generation, transmission, and distribution sectorsUsed across multiple sectors including manufacturing, construction, and energy
Common Search/ComparisonFault Analysis vs Electrical Engineer

Fault Analysis specialists focus on identifying and diagnosing electrical faults within power systems, ensuring system reliability and safety. Electrical Engineers design and develop electrical systems, often overseeing their implementation. While Fault Analysis is a specialized role within the electrical industry, Electrical Engineers have broader responsibilities in system design and development.

How to become a fault analysis engineer?

To become a fault analysis engineer, typically a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronics, or a related field is required. Gaining experience with diagnostic tools, circuit analysis, and fault detection techniques is essential, along with developing strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of industry standards. Certifications in electrical safety or specific diagnostic software can enhance job prospects.

Job description

Torch Technologies
Thank you for your interest in employment with Torch Technologies. We are a 100% employee-owned, Certified Great Place To Work and named Best Places to Work in Huntsville/Madison County, headquartered in Huntsville, AL. Our team provides superior research, development, and engineering services to the Federal Government and Department of War. As one of the nation's top 100 defense companies, the services we provide directly support the men and women who serve our country. Our corporate mission sums up the pride our employee-owners take in the work we do: "Lighting the Pathway of Freedom". And, as a Certified Evergreen ESOP, we have made the commitment to grow and sustain our company for the next 100 years! Come grow with us!
Torch Technologies is seeking a Test Engineer to join our team and support reverse engineering and test development for Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) used on weapons platforms. This role focuses on analyzing electronic hardware, developing test strategies, and supporting validation and sustainment of fielded systems through hands-on testing and automation.
As a Test Engineer, your duties will include the following, but are not limited to:
  • Analyze electronic hardware and LRUs to identify electrical interfaces, signals, communication methods, power requirements, and functional behaviors. Support reverse engineering activities to understand system operation, determine test requirements, and develop appropriate stimulus and measurement strategies.
  • Develop and execute test plans and procedures to validate analog, digital, power, communication, and control interfaces. Perform hands-on electronics testing using laboratory instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, programmable power supplies, data acquisition systems, and other electrical test equipment.
  • Develop software in C# to support hardware testing, instrumentation control, measurement acquisition, automated test execution, troubleshooting, and hardware/software integration. Work with electrical, software, and systems engineers to translate engineering requirements and manual test methods into repeatable automated test solutions.
  • Support development, integration, and troubleshooting of automated test systems, including PXI/PXIe instrumentation, switching systems, programmable power supplies, measurement equipment, and other COTS hardware. Candidates are not required to have prior PXI experience but should be comfortable applying their electrical engineering and C# programming experience to learn and integrate new test technologies.
  • Perform fault isolation, troubleshooting, debugging, and root cause analysis of electronic assemblies during testing activities. Assist in determining whether failures originate within the UUT, test hardware, cabling, instrumentation, software, or associated interfaces.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation including test procedures, test plans, interface documentation, signal definitions, test results, troubleshooting findings, and technical data supporting sustainment and validation activities.
  • Support hardware/software integration, system bring-up, verification, validation, and automated test sequence development within laboratory environments. Assist in developing self-test, diagnostic, and repeatable test capabilities where applicable.
  • Collaborate with electrical, software, mechanical, and systems engineers to ensure appropriate test coverage, accurate implementation of test requirements, and successful integration of hardware and software within automated test environments.

Qualifications:
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active Secret clearance
  • Demonstrated experience supporting, developing, integrating, testing, or troubleshooting electrical or electronic engineering projects
  • Experience programming in C#, including experience developing software that interacts with hardware, instrumentation, devices, interfaces, or engineering systems
  • Experience performing hands-on electrical or electronic testing using laboratory test equipment
  • Ability to analyze technical problems, troubleshoot hardware/software interfaces, and develop practical engineering solutions
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary engineering team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience developing or executing test procedures for electronic assemblies, circuit cards, subsystems, LRUs, or similar electrical/electronic hardware
  • Experience with electronic circuit analysis, reverse engineering, troubleshooting, or fault isolation
  • Experience developing automated test systems or other hardware/software integrated engineering systems
  • Experience communicating with or controlling instrumentation through software using Ethernet, USB, Serial, GPIB, VISA, SCPI, or similar interfaces
  • Experience with PXI/PXIe architectures, modular instrumentation, switching systems, programmable power supplies, data acquisition equipment, or other COTS test equipment
  • Experience with NI TestStand, LabVIEW, or similar automated test software
  • Experience developing automated test sequences, test applications, or measurement software
  • Experience integrating software and hardware in automated test environments
  • Familiarity with ATE interconnect solutions, Interface Test Adapters (ITAs), cable assemblies, or custom test interfaces
  • Experience with military or aerospace electrical interfaces and communication protocols such as MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, CAN, RS-422/485, Ethernet, or similar interfaces
  • Experience supporting DoD, Federal, aerospace, automotive, industrial, laboratory, or other complex engineering programs
  • Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools
  • Experience working with cross-functional engineering teams and lab-based environments
