What is a fashion designer pattern maker?

Fashion Designer Pattern Makers are professionals who create the templates or patterns used to cut fabric for garments. They work closely with fashion designers to translate design sketches into precise patterns that ensure the correct fit and style. Pattern makers use both traditional drafting techniques and computer-aided design (CAD) software to develop patterns, which are essential for sample creation and mass production in the fashion industry. Their expertise is crucial for turning creative ideas into wearable clothing.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a fashion designer pattern maker?

To thrive as a Fashion Designer Pattern Maker, you need strong skills in garment construction, pattern drafting, and textile knowledge, typically supported by a degree in fashion design or related certifications. Proficiency with CAD software like Gerber or Lectra, as well as manual pattern-making tools, is essential for precision and efficiency. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are critical soft skills for collaborating with designers and production teams. These abilities ensure accurate translation of design concepts into functional patterns, which is vital for producing high-quality, well-fitting garments.

How does a fashion designer pattern maker collaborate with designers and production teams?

Fashion Designer Pattern Makers work closely with fashion designers to interpret sketches and translate creative concepts into precise patterns. Throughout the development process, they also collaborate with sample makers and production teams to ensure patterns are accurate, feasible for manufacturing, and meet quality standards. Effective communication and feedback are key, as adjustments often need to be made based on fabric behavior, fit tests, or production constraints. This collaborative environment helps streamline the transition from design to finished garment.

Job description

Position Title: Sr.Technical Designer, RTW Development

Reporting to Title: Sr. Director, Technical Design & Operations

Summary: This role sits on the RTW design team and owns the technical design of collection styles and garments—translating the initial design sketch into the construction and style details captured in the tech pack, then passing that package off to the pattern maker, atelier staff, or factory. The Sr. Technical Designer partners closely with creative team members across every stage of garment development and works cross-functionally with design, technical design, and development.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Own the technical design of assigned collection styles end to end—translating the design sketch into complete construction and measurement details in the tech pack, and passing the package off to the pattern maker, atelier, or factory within the communicated timelines
  • Set and uphold construction, quality, and fit-consistency standards across the collection, executing design intent and brand standards at every stage
  • Own tech pack accuracy and organization—including data entry for garment components, materials, and trims—and maintain the tech pack chart tracking pass-off status and outstanding updates
  • Lead construction notes in sketch reviews and drive technical technique trials and approvals with the design team
  • Serve as the technical design point of contact for the atelier and overseas development factories, ensuring tech pack intent is understood and executed on both in-house and out-of-house launches
  • Direct design fittings—capturing fit and technical notes and setting garment execution, distribution, and next steps in line with the design aesthetic and brand intent
  • Own reporting on tech pack pass-off and timing for weekly design ops meetings, where line sheets and sketches are reviewed, and partner with the VP of Design on technical design priorities
  • Represent technical design in garment proto reviews and cross-functional meetings with design, PD, and production—ensuring every garment is assessed and, where needed, proposing solutions or supplemental concepts aligned to the seasonal line plan
  • Resolve fit and construction issues on vendor samples and in pre-fit sessions on live models, partnering with the designer and pattern maker to achieve the intended aesthetic and proper fit
  • Own model alteration notes for seasonal fashion show and lookbook styling.
