Farming Part Time information

What is a farming part time job?

Farming part-time jobs are roles within the agricultural sector that allow individuals to work fewer hours than traditional full-time positions. These jobs can include tasks such as planting, harvesting, animal care, equipment maintenance, or assisting with farm management, and they often offer flexible schedules. Part-time farming is ideal for those seeking supplemental income, experience in agriculture, or a way to contribute to a family farm without a full-time commitment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a farming part time worker?

To thrive as a part-time farm worker, you need basic agricultural knowledge, physical stamina, and familiarity with farm operations, often gained through on-the-job training rather than formal qualifications. Experience with farm machinery, basic maintenance tools, and sometimes safety certifications like tractor operation are commonly required. Strong work ethic, reliability, and teamwork are vital soft skills that help ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely. These abilities are crucial because they ensure productivity, safety, and effective support for the farm's daily operations.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time farm workers, and how can they be managed?

Part-time farm workers often face challenges such as adapting to physically demanding tasks, managing variable work hours based on weather and crop needs, and quickly learning new equipment or processes. To manage these challenges, it's helpful to communicate regularly with supervisors, ask for guidance when learning new tasks, and prioritize safety on the job. Additionally, staying organized and flexible with your schedule can help you adjust to the seasonal and sometimes unpredictable nature of farm work.

  • Providing excellent service to customers while showcasing an extensive knowledge of our products and brand

  • Working behind the bar during both typical day-to-day service as well as for private events in our event space

  • Cleaning and maintaining glassware and work space

Job description

About the organization

West Sixth Brewing is a craft brewery founded in and headquartered in downtown Lexington, KY. We focus on producing the highest quality craft beer, sharing it with others by distributing it to restaurants and bars throughout Kentucky. We also pop-up at events from Paducah to Pikeville, delivering a taste of our taprooms to communities in every part of the state. And we operate taprooms at our production facility, located in the Bread Box at 501 West Sixth Street; at our NuLu location in downtown Louisville; the West Sixth Farm in Franklin County; and our newest spot in Covington, the West Sixth CovHaus. Along the way, we've also expanded to include private events and catering at these locations, as well kitchens at our NuLu taproom (the Galley) and our Farm taproom (West Sixth Cantina)

Over the years, we've worked hard to take care of our people and show up for our communities. From our choices to focus on green design inside the taproom, to our selection of cans for distributing out beer, to our commitment to give 6% of all net profits back to other community organizations via the Sixth for a Cause Foundation, we try to live our values in every decision we make.

We work hard, but we have fun. Working in the beer industry is all about taking care of our customers, each other, and celebrating everything from life's major milestones to a simple beautiful weekday afternoon over a great, locally-made beer.

About the Position

West Sixth Farm Part-time Bartender (6-15 hours/week)

Our taprooms are the bread and butter of our business, a main source of revenue and just as important, often the first place that people experience West Sixth Brewing and our beers. Because of this, we truly believe that the experience must be fantastic -- from the service folks receive, to the beers they drink, to the space they drink it in...our mission is to put our best foot forward, welcoming folks into our world. Our Farm taproom is a beautiful space serving high-quality beer that we produce both at our main production brewery in Lexington, as well as those that we brew weekly on-site in Louisville. We're seasonal-a couple of days/week through the low season (Nov-March), and 3-4 days/week from March-October. Situated on a 120-acre farmland in Franklin County, we work with the land around us to offer our customer experiences like hiking, disc-golf, mountain biking, and more. It's a truly unique space to spend time with friends or family, enjoying the outdoors and having a few beers.

What are we looking for? Folks who love to host, who embody what it means to make someone feel welcome. Enthusiasm, joy, creativity. Folks who wanna connect with our customers and leave them feeling wowed by how taken care of they felt. Folks who work together with their crew behind the bar to create awesome experiences every day. Hard-working, attention to detail, sweating the small stuff...caring. You'll be recommending and pouring beers, walking customers through flights, bussing tables and washing dishes, connecting with customers. If you love beer and can go long on your favorite hop varietals, awesome. If you're interested in beer, but you're not at that level yet, and wanna learn more, we can teach you. As long as you're interested, and you care about taking care of our customers and helping us create killer experiences for them, let's go!

We're looking for some flexibility, and nights/weekends are a must: that's when we do the majority of our business. We will communicate schedules to you and the rest of the crew in a timely manner, with plenty of advance

Who Should Apply? We're looking for folks who identify with these core principles:

Team-first: we work together, we are kind to each other

Hard-working/Growth Mindset: we're doing work we enjoy and are passionate about, so we work hard to do it well. Part of the process is growing, taking on new challenges and being comfortable with evolving and changing

Hospitality as a privilege: wegetto do this, and are fortunate to have opportunities to make someone's day, everyday. Kind to customers, always thinking of what we can do to make their experience a great one

Interest: we have a true interest in beer and hospitality, and growing our knowledge base in those areas

Day to day activities

  • Providing excellent service to customers while showcasing an extensive knowledge of our products and brand
  • Working behind the bar during both typical day-to-day service as well as for private events in our event space
  • Cleaning and maintaining glassware and work space
  • Fulfilling opening and closing duties, as needed
  • Maintaining communication (in person and digital via slack/email, etc) with Taproom Manager and other co-workers, and staying up to date on events and info necessary to provide excellent service in the Taproom
  • Give tours of the space upon request, in addition to scheduled official tours

Skills required

  • Excellent personal communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • 100% reliability
  • Honesty and Integrity
  • Proactive personality
  • A basic familiarity in using the web and other technology
  • The ability to lift 55 pounds
  • Time flexibility outside of established work schedule for meetings, etc.
  • The ability to taste our beers and describe them to customers.

The right person will be in someone that wants to join a team where we all are wearing multiple hats, and you will too. We're looking for a team player, and one who is excited about the challenge of helping to build a successful business. We're looking for someone who is interested in playing a role in the overall business long term.
